(I just typed "double labeled water" into the search box in Google and voila!)3 -
Basically H and or O molecules in water are completely or partially replaced with a non radioactive isotope of that element. The isotope concentration is then measured from bodily fluids, (pee mostly). Based on the rate of elimination of the isotope a very accurate base metabolic rate can be calculated. Google John Speakman, he has done some really interesting research about obesity. http://www.abdn.ac.uk/energetics-research/research/obesity/3
