Dumbbells for heavy lifting?

Can I lift heavy with dumbbells or does it have to gym barbells? I'm not talking about 2 lbs dumbbells, but something more heavy. I am thinking of starting off with 10 - 20 pounds and then work my way up. Would that work? I need to tone up since I have a LOT of fat in my body (see below).
Any advise?

I think you can lift with anything that is heavy - dumbbells, barbells, kettle bells, as long as your using a challenging weight the form of the weight shouldn't matter...0
