Breakfast... with coffee - weight gain, I've posted before but I'm sure it stimulates my appetite!

It's bizarre, I am actually one of those people that is hungry first thing and I have lots of coffee.
recently I have gained weight again and have a massive appetite, the only difference is I have work stress and I'm eating breakfast and drinking more coffee...
I reflect back to periods of weight loss and I had nada until lunch. I guess it's a case of different strokes for different folks?
By the way I am aware there is no magic pill for weight loss, and I know not having breakfast must mean overall deficit, but I'm talking about the actual affect on appetite..

Is your coffee just plain coffee with nothing added?1

Coffee with skimmed milk GaleH0

Well that would not be much of a calorie source of any weight gain. I know some people who never eat breakfast but I do. Full coffee makes me sleepy for some reason however. Maybe it is an age thing.
Yes we can be different from others so in the end the way of eating that works best for us seems to be the route to go.2 -

If I eat breakfast in the morning, it ends up making me eat more all day long. It pretty much starts up my stomach for the day and then it whines nonstop. That whole "breakfast is the most important meal of the day" advertisement has almost become gospel across the world, to the point that everyone believes it's science--but for some people (like me!), eating breakfast just isn't a good thing!7 -

This was the only way I have found so far to lose weight. Kicked breakfast to the curb. It got rid of the daily hunger pangs and I am much more happy when I only begin to eat from lunch and after.
If I eat breakfast, I am ravenously hungry and munchy for the rest of the day.5 -
Maybe you should look into intermittently fasting. Not eating until lunch is a pretty common IF practice I think.
Also, I wouldn't necessarily assume that coffee is the culprit. If you are experiencing higher levels of stress, and eating in the morning, I would say those are the main factors, not the coffee. That said, we are all different so maybe the coffee is contributing-- hard to say for sure.2 -

You see I'm wondering if coffee is making me more sleepy, it never used to, but I feel a slump an hour afterwards- maybe I'm just weird!1 -

Ah that's so interesting thank you for sharing! I really wonder if it's the way to go for me...0 -
I have to eat breakfast or I go overboard at lunchtime. Yes i guess it is different strokes for different folks. Years and years ago I would skip breakfast only to find myself eating a bag of Capps hot fries and a 20 oz coke around 10:30. I just couldn't do it anymore.0

Yes it's tricky, I appreciate my appetite and weak will is also to blame :-) but I have definitely noticed weight loss in periods whereby I have gone without (but maybe other variables..)0 -

This is also interesting because I was overweight as a teenager (for a short period) and I used to skip breakfast... however there was a large McDonalds milkshake (yuk is all I can think now) around 10.30am I seem to remember so that can't have helped.

I don't eat "breakfast" until about 9:30, although I'm up at 5:00. I wouldn't make it until lunch. I pack/plan my breakfast, lunch and snack to have a work.
But if I eat when I get up, I'm still as hungry at 9:30 as I would be without eating. So, I cut out eating when I get up.2 -
Quiksysylver that's exactly what I was thinking today, it doesn't matter whether I eat early (like you I'm up very early not quite 05.00 though, respect) or not, I am still hungry and sluggish by mid am.
I just generally notice my craving for food (rather than hunger) is more stimulated by breakfast but maybe that's because I love food and get a bit of a kick out of eating, and when I get my food fix I'm a greedy thing and want more...2 -
You can add me to the 'breakfast makes me so hungry all day' camp. I just don't eat it! Only thing l have is coffee. Milk and no sugar. I feel coffee is great for when l do feel a little hungry. I eat at 11am and the calories saved means l can have bigger meals later especially dinner.3

I find this reason appeals to my science side. I know it is not a dehydration factor in my case.0 -

Well then...don't do this!
All the science in the world (and I say this as a science and studies nut) won't change something that is consistent for you.
If something isn't working, throw it out. If something is working, keep it.

Interesting, it's definitely not dehydration in my case! I think I get the slump an hour after, by four hours I'm am getting very, very sleepy. I didn't used to be like this, did you find it was an age thing too GaleHawkins0 -

4 legs, do you eat brekkie then? just mid- am?
It's such a shame with something there aren't a cut and fast rule, I try and do what I'm told and it doesn't work for me!0 -
as i was growing up i would never eat breakfast and i hated school lunches. I never packed food for school either. This led to me binge later on in the day. Huge meals, seconds, portions out of control. I started working and i couldn't do it anymore. i needed breakfast. Now I'm not eating nearly as much as i used to.
So! to each their own!2 -
Everyone is different, listen to your body and do what works best for you. Eating 3 meals a day is just what fits round a day job, not how humans evolved. I know someone who eats one meal a day, and another who grazes all day. Neither would work for me but it works for them.
I also find breakfast makes me hungry all day. I have black coffee and water until I actually feel hungry. Then I have "breakfast", usually about 9.30am. I have 28g porridge oats and water, which is healthy and I like eat. I keep oats in my draw at work. All you need is hot water and you have a healthy breakfast or snack.
Once I have my porridge I know I'll be hungry and can't skip meals without being miserable for the rest of the day. But if something happens and I get caught up meaning I miss breakfast I won't be hungry all day, until I eat something.0 -

Brilliant yes indeed. I think i need to convince myself it's this that isn't working.... you see it's not like anyone is forcing me to eat and drink coffee it's going to be a tough habit to break!

I cut out breakfast since it got the appetite flowing on high gear and was making me eat more.
And the morning snacking was really starting to take it's toll on my progress.
Since I like to go to work by 5ish waiting till lunch was just too long and I would get too hungry.
So, at somewhere between 8-9 I have an apple or make some air popcorn . They are filling and hold
me over till lunchtime.
While the solution might also be to eat lunch earlier, I just like to eat with the rest of the office people
Since it's the best time to socialize.1 -
How much milk are you putting in each of your coffees? Is it like 15 mL each coffee or 125 mL?1

Yup, this is what I do. I still have a meal I call breakfast, but I eat it 3-5 hours after I wake up. For one thing, I'm not particularly hungry after waking up, so eating is pointless; and for another, it shortens my eating window significantly and makes it way easier to eat within my goal.2 -

Thanks for posting. It's interesting your reponse is similar to mine/ increased appetite. I actually think this is a great strategy.1 -
Well this am I just had a coffee but kept it to one and a small square of chocolate (!) and now just as hungry as I would have been with a full on amount as I have had previously... will watch this space.0

You talk a lot about the coffee, but you haven't mentioned what you usually have for breakfast. What do you tend to eat for breakfast with the coffee? Maybe there's something you're eating in combination that is giving you a short burst of energy and then you crash a few hours later.
Also in terms of the coffee, how much coffee compared to how much milk? If I read correctly you're using 125 ml of milk in each coffee??0
