I am 4'11 and weigh 185.
I want to lose 40 pounds by October. Is it safe to lose 40 pounds in 5 months? If so, how is the best way to do it?

Well that's around 2lbs a week so don't think it's too unhealthy as long as you try and eat balanced. 2lbs a week is the max for most that's considered healthy to lose.1

Be aware that 2lb per week may not be sustainable the closer you get to your target. However you will probably drop a lot of water weight initially so you should be able to get fairly close to your target in 5 months.1

At your current weight, it is both doable and safe.
As for how to do it, set your goal to 2lbs per week loss and log accurately what you are eating.1
