Hi all,

I would like some advice on what to eat in the evenings for my dinner but for it not to include carbs. Currenlty I weigh 191.4 and have been up and down around this area for a few weeks and not moving consistantly downwards as I was hoping. I do feel that I am losing some inches of my belly but I think I could do better. I feel I exercise quite a bit. I walk to and from work 3 times a week, 40 minutes each way, I will go for a run 1 to 2 times a week for 20 minutes, I coach table tennis 4 hours a week, and I cycle to and from coaching which is 20 minutes each way.

I do feel that its my diet that is letting me down now as I am a hell of alot more active now. But what can I eat in the evening for dinner other than carbs. I love bread, pasta, spuds and rice and I know I need to stay away from these in the evening but what can I use as a substitute.

Thanks

Al

I'm trying to go lower carb too! Dinners I do a meat and vegetables, like a salad, broccoli, etc. Sometimes using cooked onion can have the same comfort food feel to a meal like carbs. Limit and pick the right carbs. One ice-cream scooper of rice, but wild whole grain rice. Good luck!
  • Hi Al

Well done on all of your weight loss efforts!

I am a huge fan of low-carbing as it has always been my backup plan for shifting unwanted weight and obtaining some really defined muscle tone.

I recommend basing your evening meals on a healthy protein dish; chicken, turkey, prawns, salmon and pair it up with a green salad or veg. Chicken salad or salmon and broccoli are PERFECT evening meals. If you still feel hungry after this I also recommend a whey protein shake (mixed with water) or FAGE 0% Greek Yoghurt.

    Best of luck!!!

I think it'll be hard for a few weeks but you won't miss them after that.

We generally do a protein (chicken, beef, fish, etc) and vegetable and/or salad every night, and have been doing this for 10+ years. I absolutely love risotto, rice, pasta, bread, etc....but you just get used to limiting them to once a week, or to special occasions or when eating out. My salads are usually pretty hearty too--usually including nuts (almonds, pumpkin seeds), maybe a little fresh Parmesan and dried fruit, these make it a little more substantial.

    Good luck!

I'm also a big fan of the low-carb (or more specifically the low bread/simple carb life - complex veggie carbs rock!). Just something to ask yourself, is a high protein and higher fat diet what your body works well off of? Some people can't handle a low carb diet. So make sure you pay attention to how you feel after you eat this way and don't force yourself to do something your body doesn't like. :)

On to suggestions for good eats...

I love stir frys! Take some chicken or steak chop it up, sautee it in some canola oil, add a lil onion, pepper, garlic, soy sauce, ginger, and a bunch of veggies. I like a bit of spice so I add some red pepper flakes and sriracha. To get the pseudo carb I love waterchestnuts.

Beans have been a good replacement for bready things with me. They have a higher carb count, but they aren't bread and pasta, so I don't mind. Chili is great...lean ground beef, ground chicken, ground turkey are all great. Pair with a salad for something easy.

Tuna salad and put it in a romaine lettuce leaf...Turkey roll ups (turkey cold cuts in romaine leaf)... Roast some root veggies in the oven... steam some zucchini/squash with some onion & spices... Oven roasted chicken... Basically just make a protein you really like and a bunch of veggies. I think we get really caught up in thinking that bready stuff is such a staple that we forget that a meal can be made of so many other things. :)

Also, you could consider something like the Dreamfields pasta that has a low carb count (like 5 carbs per serving) and there are other low carb versions of things, like tortillas. Unless that would trigger more cravings for you.

Do you like to grill? I have been skewering lean beef, chicken, & pork along with fruits & veggies for a tasty & easy summer supper. I don't even miss the bread & pasta. Brush with garlic oil, salad dressing, or marinade to kick up the flavor.

    Hi,

I think if you're doing that much exercise you need carbs. It's all about a balance. I've been advised to have a palm size of protien, a fist of carbs and the rest veg. I also lost 21lbs last year and kept it off by following a diet plan where I could eat carbs, I'm not sure if I can say the name here though...I will say that cut out bread and that basically made the weight drop off, it's so fattening. I ate pasta and potatoes all the way through and I made all my sauces from scratch so there wasn't extra calories in there I didn't know about. Stay away from anything man made (bread) and you're fine with what's natural (potatoes). Hope that helps!

A life without carbs isn't worth it!!

Well, here are a couple of choices I have at the moment :

    1 cup of turnips
    4oz chicken
1.5 cups of veggies (usually steamed brocoli is good).

    OR

    4oz white fish
    2 cups green beans
    .5 oz of raw almonds

    Remember: no butters or oils

These meals are surprisingly filling. I eat supper around 5 or 530PM and have a protein shake (.5 scoop) with 1 cup of berries (no sugar added mixed with water in blender) at 8:30 and I'm good till the morning!

Also, it would be wise to follow some of the advice on here (each meal have carbs - size of your fist; protein - size of your flat palm; and veggies - 1-1.5 cups) You should also be thinking about eating 6 meals a day 2.5 - 3 hrs apart to rev up your metabolism and have more energy - giving you better workouts or to support your VERY active lifestyle. Also, check out your vitamin cabinet... If you are not taking supplements you may risk burning your supply and then feeling tired and sluggish. Another point would be to (if possible) add some weight training to your schedule to support the muscles you are using regularly.

    GOOD LUCK!!

I agree with the different ideas thrown out there....You can try gilled meats (chicken breast, salmon etc) with different variations of veggies....brocolli, carrots, cabbage (steamed) etc....however, based on how much excercise you do daily, you may need to additional carbs in the evening...so maybe just 1/2 cup brown rice...or 3 oz of baked sweet potato, or something like that

Test your body and see how it feels....carbs are not bad....try and stick to the natural carbs, potato and rice

Carb fuels the body with energy

Also, if you are doing as much workout as you seem to be doing, and having a hard time losing weight, it could be a lot more than just cutting out carbs in the evening....How much calories are you taking in daily? How much water do you drink daily? Are you eating alot of fruits and veggies?

    Goodluck

The only "carbs" you need in your body are the natural ones........................Nuts, Veggies and Some Fruit.

We weren't meant to eat tubers (potatos), grains and dairy, regardless of what a lot of people think, humans have not evolved that far.............

I have cut out all of the above with the exception of an occasional baked sweet potato and Greek Yogurt. Other than that, all of my carbs come from loads and loads of veggies, nuts and I eat a little fruit.

I am doing some strenuous exercises also.

And in the absence of starchy carbs such as bread, potatos, and rice - you can add in more Fat that will give you loads of energy.

Now that i am on the medications for Thyroid and Adrenal Gland Fatigue I am dedicated to my low carb way of life even more and I am losing about .6 pounds per day. (which is about 4.2 pounds per week).

Thanks for everything guys, it sounds like my portion sizes are to big maybe, I should reduce the size of the carbs and increase the veggies and salad.

"Also, if you are doing as much workout as you seem to be doing, and having a hard time losing weight, it could be a lot more than just cutting out carbs in the evening....How much calories are you taking in daily? How much water do you drink daily? Are you eating alot of fruits and veggies?"

Miqisha - With regards to the answer to this, I am pretty much level with calories in vs calories out each day, but dont tend to go over 2k calories a day anyway, which is between 1.5k and 2k less than i used to eat, with no exercise. Last few days i have had a big differnece between inatke and expenditure, with teh intake been far less but still feeling full.
I drink about 1.5 litres of water per day, always have a bottle of water with me. I wouldnt say i am eating lots of fruit and veg, but im def getting my 5 a day. I think i may being a bit hard on myself, as i have only been doing this fitness regime since May, I may be expecting too much to soon, but i do feel i need to control my portion size.
  • Al you may want to take your measurements also. I know up in tell recently I was not loosing any weight, but i was loosing inches which is important. You were changing the fat to muscle and muscle weighs more than fat. I also would look at the portion sizes. Use a smaller plate, don't load that plate to the sky, leave a little bit of space between the food so you can see the plate around each food section. I find this helps with my portions. I am one of those people who have to have carbs my body shuts down and I get really sick. I tried doing those diets before. I hope that gives you some more ideas.
