Creating a healthy lifestyle and managing my diabetes

I have had type 2 diabetes for a number of years but recently, due to it's apparent escalation, have been getting much more serious about managing it. Two primary areas of focus; (1) good food choices, especially portions and (2) being active. Looking for people who will work along with me in this endeavor.

Happy to help. Over 5 years since diagnosed. Pretty much in non-diabetic numbers at this point.
Start off by doing research of how carbohydrates work. Read up on the glycemic index so you know how fast certain foods hit your blood stream. Food wise load up on greens. For the other foods try not to go over a palm size and generally you will be ok. You need to understand more than anything what accounts for a serving. A food scale can help when a label is in oz vs. quantity consumed. I still eat rice without issue but a cup means a cup or will be playing a bad sugar game.
Exercise wise I do HIIT type workouts. Do a google search for HIIT and Diabetes. Some good research on this topic has been done and based on my results I'd say it works. Its a hard workout but when I started it combined with eating right I saw a near 100 point swing in less than 1 month.
Water is key for me. I drink heavy amounts of water to control appetite and flush out the junk. Controversial topic for some and the trolls on these boards may attacked over it but it works at least on my end. If interested read up on how the Japanese control weight with water.
If you haven't already see a Nutritionist and get Diabetes counseling. If it is in your financial budget I'd strongly suggest a trainer to get you started on working out.0 -
I was pre-diabetic @ 212 but at 160 or less my A1C was 5.4 no more metformin! I started off slow, 30 mins of light every other day and when I saw the weight coming off it motivated me to do more. As for food, boy that took a LONG time but I learned over the course of my 18 month journey. Now I eat to live, not live to eat, you just learn over the journey to make better choices. It's not easy, but yo have to be in it for the long term, its a lifestyle change, not a quick fix, so take it slow and enjoy the journey, there will be ups and downs but your in it for the long term.1
