So for 2 months, i did the LCHF diet. lost weight in month 1 but stalled in month 2. For a WHOLE MONTH. grrr. Long story short, went to my doctor this week, he said keep calories at 1400 (which is what MFP says, to lose weight, and to keep my sugars lower - keep carbs 50 - 100. Voila. Added more fruit this week and more carbs, kept calories below 1400, stopped eating all that fat that was OK on the LCHF diet, and voila. i lost more weight this week than i have all thru April. All that fat was adding calories keeping me at a kind of maintenance diet. So my pre-diabetes is reversing!!! So, looks like it is old fashioned calorie counting and carb counting. but i dont have to go as drastic as LCHF.
Also, i don't understand how bacon and butter can be healthier than a carrot or low carb wheat tortilla (1 net carb!)

All weight loss is calories in vs. calories out. Nothing wrong with high fat, some people find fat satiating but others don't. As long as you stay within your calories you will lose weight. Besides measuring fats is critical because they are so calorie dense....that's where a food scale comes in handy.
Glad you found what works for you.6 -
Weight loss will depend on the calories you consume in the food that is eaten, not the amount of carbhydrate, fat, or protien that make up the calories.
If the amount of calories taken in exceed the amount of calories expended by the body then weight will be gained. This weight increase can be fat, muscle, fluid.
To lose weight you only need be concerned wether the amount of caloric intake is less than the amount expended.
Therefore feel free to eat whatever foods you like.4 -
on the LCHF diet, some of them say dont count calories, only count carbs. looks like that is not good advice! so glad that scale finally moved after 4 weeks. i have to stop myself from mourning the time i wasted, but i suppose maybe it was valuable info to show what works. though i hate that i delayed my self for a month grrrr. i'm so running to make my goals.. its like running a race and then something is pulling at the back of your shirt pulling you back! hope that makes senese. but i cannot think about that, i just have to continue going forward. good thing i found out before it turned into 2 months of maintaining. or even gaining.1

Well, bacon isn't comparable to carrots because they are different foods. Bacon will give you protein and fat which are both essentials to the human diet and the carrots will give you a bunch of micronutrients which are also essential to the human diet. It's not an either or situation.
Also important to remember this is a race but a marathon, a very long race in which you will have setbacks and learning curves. That's okay, it's being human and happens in every and any aspect of life.6 -
ok, that makes sense. but i meant - eating 0 carrots and a whole bunch of bacon - how is that more healthy? I belive the key is - limit bacon and carrots due the fat and carb levels in them for me. but can have both in a particular amount. like i will cook cabbage and use bacon as flavor. (maybe 3 pieces for one head of cabbage should do)0

Confused about this -- where'd you get the 50-100 carb number? That's low carb, it's not MFP default. (You can lose on that number--I do (and so far as I know it's LCHF, but definitions, schmefinitions--or on a higher number, which I have in the past.)Added more fruit this week and more carbs, kept calories below 1400, stopped eating all that fat that was OK on the LCHF diet, and voila.
Great, but it's not fat vs. carbs, it's calories. All that fat was adding calories keeping me at a kind of maintenance diet.
Yeah, calories matter, but you can do 1400 with any amount of carbs vs. fat that appeals to you.
And yes of course you don't have to do LCHF (or keto, which I think is what you mean). Also, i don't understand how bacon and butter can be healthier than a carrot or low carb wheat tortilla (1 net carb!)
Eh, individual foods aren't healthy or not, but I certainly think carrots and low carb wheat tortillas (or many other carbier things) can fit easily in a healthful diet. Heck, I am doing LCHF now and eat carrots (and lots of other vegetables). I don't eat low carb tortillas since for me they would be a waste of calories, as I'm not into tortillas, but if you like them, excellent.0 -

No, I'd say that's bad advice, wherever it came from. Lots of diet guru types push not counting as it locks you into their thing, whatever it is. (Others seem to think humans won't react well to counting, which IMO depends on personality type, but I like it, whatever carb level I am doing.)1 -

thanks for your kind answer! I am reversing pre-diabetes and that is what the doc recommended. Its actually more carbs than I allowed myself. MFP allows me like 200 or more, and so that is too high for my goals.
I had started on the LCHF diet and so fruit was not ok. I am learning that its calories that are making me lose weight. I thought it was the low carb, I don't feel like explaining it all to you, but that's just what I thought. didn't work! I was wrong. I am looking for things that will fit into those parameters - below 1400 cals and up to 100 carbs. So that is where I am right now.. adding some more things without going over those two numbers.

Ah, your doctor's advice seems reasonable. Here's a discussion of a study you might find interesting: http://caloriesproper.com/carbs-low-vs-lower/I had started on the LCHF diet and so fruit was not ok. Sounds cool. I don't have T2D or IR, but I actually like eating around 100 g of carbs, I find it makes it easier to stick to my calories and fits with my food preferences. I am currently experimenting with keto, but still a bit over 50 g total because no way I'm cutting way down on vegetables and I eat nuts and some dairy (I exercise enough that I think this number is low enough, and if not no biggie). However, when fruit comes in season here I expect I'll go up a bit more since I love it. Around 100 made it not difficult to fit in fruit, veg, dairy, nuts, and some potato or sweet potato or legumes.0 -
The doctor put my husband and me on a Low Calorie/Low Carb. diet, due to high blood pressure and breathing problems. Since March we have each lost 40 lbs. and feeling sooo much better! We truly do NOT miss the extra carbs, but I am having difficulty finding ways to fix dishes without becoming bored with the same old stuff. Any ideas? Please let me know...Thank you ...Oh, we have NOT had soft drinks since May of 2012...Stomach problems nearly went away...hummmm....0
