I consider myself a long term depressive. I'm super sensitive and empathetic and often turn to food to self soothe. One thing that has helped me in my weight lost journey (lost 12 lbs) is remembering when I get upset, stressed, bored, etc and want to turn to food for comfort, is that the pleasure will only last the 5 minutes or less that it takes me to eat the food, I can never get enough joy out of it while im actually consuming it, and my emotions or bordom will not be satisfied once im done. Id just be eager to immediately eat portion after portion until I've consumed an irrational amount and I'd still feel the void. In other words....it won't work. Using this thought process and sticking to my first no, when thinking about eating extra large or too many portions tends to help me. Also trying again and trying to do a little bit better than I did last time if I have a set back. The best advice I've gotten is to be kind to yourself, you'll make a lot more progress.

You might want to consider whether you also have binge eating disorder (BED). There is a type of cognitive behavioural therapy that will free you from self soothing by eating. I say this because depression by itself usually causes weight loss due to lack of interest in anything enjoyable including eating. Depression also causes fatigue so sufferers will forget to eat or not have the energy to get anything to eat. To me it sounds like you have a double whammy of depression and BED. Maybe chat with your psychiatrist about it?

I'm really sorry to hear that you are depressed but I am very proud and happy to hear that now you have stopped overeating as it is not healthy. What are some things you are doing to be kind to yourself and to cope with depression? Lots of love x
