I was curious if anyone has used a HR monitor during a class to verify the amount of calories they burn during a class? I'm taking a beginner level Krav Maga class 3x per week - during stripe/belt testing I think probably 300 cal for the hour but otherwise 100-150 maybe... I am 5'7'' and 160lbs and I have not verified with a HR monitor yet. Just curious on the ranges people are actually getting.

I wear a monitor when I work out at home, and I've paid attention to how much I burn when doing different things--bag work, kata, sparring, etc. Then I estimate classes.

I wear my Polar HRM religiously during all my workouts. I wear mine during my TKD classes which last a little over an hour. I can burn anywhere from 350-450 calories depending on the kind of drills we're doing. If we are sparring during a class, it will be more. We don't spar in every single class. I have about 70 pounds on you, we are the same height.

Definitely only an estimate (http://timbrucejiujitsu.blogspot.com/2012/07/how-many-calories-do-we-burn-in-bjj.html), but it's at least something if wearing the monitor is impractical.

Example is BJJ, but sure it could be applied to Krav Maga based on selecting some "about the same" type activities.
