What is NYT's justification for publishing such clearly sensitive information about the Manchester bombing?

It's news. Most news is reported to sell stories. The more sensational the better.

Good question--I'd write them and ask.

I've always found that reporters have to be borderline heartless. They don't care who gets hurt or what kind of investigation it messes with. As long as they are the first to report the story, that's all they care about.

I'm from the Manchester area, the US press was publishing names (which were leaked to them immediately) before the kids families had been told, luckily our government has stopped sharing sensitive information with the US's incompetent colander of a government regarding the tragedy which is jeopardising the investigation, beggars belief.

Oh geez. I saw the bomb article. Good to see they showed some restraint--stopping just shy of step-by-step instructions.

This made me so mad. It was clear to me that UK news outlets had similar information and had decided collectively not to publish in order to protect the ongoing investigations.

I'm pretty sure the NYT plainly states it's moral position on the front page "All the the news that is fitb]ted[/b to print [around the advertising]."

It's probably fake news anyway. I don't trust anything from the news nowadays.

I'm going to use this opportunity, given the subject matter of this thread to derail a little. I've been wanting so much to express this here at MFP, an international site, but didn't know how to approach it given the controversial nature of this ghastly and unthinkable crime.

I'm sickened and beyond saddened about what happened in Manchester, England. I can't read or watch news clips about the parents begging for word on their young daughters, or read about and see photos of the murdered victims and their families without crying.

And more importantly I am OUTRAGED about what happened there. And I hope the British citizens are too.

    respect.

I've also heard media and politicians say that we need to get used to these kind of attacks occurring in the future.

    Ummm... No

The news has no moral compass, unfortunately. I gave up on it earlier this year.

Not the NYT in particular...it's not like it gets any better somewhere else...just the news. Blood sells.

I need to live in ignorance and bliss for a couple of years, if I can resist to urge to find out what's happening.

My heart go out to the Manchester victims and their families.

I think the quote was something to the effect of (paraphrasing):

"Terrorists attacks are part and parcel to living in a large city"

which is different than urging folks to simply accept it, right?

Unfortunately, it seems all these leaks are politically motivated. No matter how you feel about this administration, information like THIS should never be leaked.

Paraphrasing is the problem...point us to the actual quote...

Sheesh, all I'm asking for is an actual quote??? That is quite a serious allegation against the London Mayor! Put up credible source?

Ha, no worries... I googled it and found a quote from a website that wasn't familiar to me yet struck me as pretty far right wing. I didn't want to link over to that particular site because I don't want to take a political stance here, one way or the other.

Give me a minute and I'll see if I can find the quote on a site that I know to be reputable.

    Edit:

This is the most neutral site that I could find on the subject:

    http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/sadiq-khan-lodon-mayor-terrorism-attacks-part-and-parcel-major-cities-new-york-bombing-a7322846.html

Other sites were bashing the good mayor or bashing President Trump.... everyone it seems has an agenda.

My personal agenda is to come here to goof and clown around; politics isn't part of that.
