Does anybody know to log kettle bell as an exercise? I've just started with a beginner's workout which is 20 minutes, don't have a hrm or anything so have got no idea about calories burned.

According to research you can burn 20 calories a minute during a kettle bells class. So thats 400 calories in 20mins.
See the link http://www.webmd.com/fitness-exercise/news/20100212/kettlebell-workouts-burn-calaories-fast
I've just added this manually into my app on the iphone and calculated it out for the 45min class I do.0 -
I use circuit training - when I don't use my HRM - I have found on a more cardio based KB workout my burn is higher than the circuit training but I would be careful with that research as the the subjects were doing 20 minutes of KB snatches which is a highly aerobic activity that most people couldn't do (including me and I have done over 12 weeks of pretty intensive KB work) and most classes would be lower than 20 calories per minute
Using my HRM I burn between 500 to 600 calories in 45 minutes...0 -

Not to rain on your parade, but they did that research on "Experienced" kettlebell users who were doing hardcore snatch tests. I'm not sure you would achieve that level of sustained burn in a class setting with inexperienced users (especially if you were mixing in less cardiovascularly taxing manoeuvres such as cleans or windmills).
The key, as always, is to check on where the claim comes from, who they tested it with, what the test consisted of, and has the research been repeated over and over to establish and clarify the results.
All that being said, kettlebells can be used to devastating calorie burning effect and also used at lower reps with heavier bells to build strength. Just gotta be sure we're all talking about the same thing!0 -
20 minutes of snatches must be in 2-3 min intervals. Not sure anyone could do snatches for 20 min straight!0

This.
I've read that study a number of times, and it's very credible. HOWEVER:
1. Repetitive, heavy kettlebell snatches are very taxing on the cardiovascular system; I have never seen any group kettlebell class doing heavy snatches (or any kind of snatches). You are just not going to get the same burn doing swings or non-ballistic lifts.
2. The study results were an average of the burns of both male and female participants, all of whom were experienced kettlbell users in good shape, and who ranged in age from 29 to 46. You can't just assume that everyone is going to burn calories at that rate. Females will typically burn less, older people will burn less, lighter people will burn less, etc.
3. The 20 cals/minute figure includes both aerobic and anaerobic burns, the latter of which were calculated by measuring blood lactate levels in a laboratory setting. You can't replicate that yourself, so you are better off not trying to guess at what your anaerobic burn is. The actual aerobic burn (again, an average of all participants) was 13 cals/minute.
This is strictly my experience, but when I am doing hard, heavy snatch intervals, my HRM shows a burn of about 10 calories per minute. But HRMs are not designed for interval workouts, and I know of no one personally who can (or would even try) to snatch for 20 minutes straight. So there's really no way to know how accurate the HRM info is.
For those who are interested in the study, here is a PDF: http://www.acefitness.org/getfit/studies/kettlebells012010.pdf0 -

i thought people who are in good shape burn LESS?0 -

Well, they weren't college kids for a start. Anyway, you couldn't do these level of kettlebell exercises unless you had the snatch technique down and also were in great shape.
If you don't have these prerequisites, you're not going to be snatching like this, full stop.0
