Is it just DOMS (shin pain)

Sorry, another question about shin pain - I know this comes up a lot!
I started running in March, and my shins hurt all the time but it's only very mild. It's like the inside of my shins on both legs are bruised - painful to touch and sore when I walk etc.

Is this just DOMS? I run every 2 days. Only 3 or 4 miles at the mo - I'm working up distance slowly.
It doesn't really hurt while I'm running.

I'm quite happy to put up with it as it is, but I obv don't want to cause injury if it's not just normal muscle aches.

Thanks for any advice!

I'm not versed enough to guide you on this one, but I'm sure someone else will be. I just wanted to say that sounds similar (location-wise) to the shin splints I used to get. There are anterior shin splints and posteromedial shin splints. With mine each step was excruciating. Initially just with running, but eventually with walking too. For me it was pushing too hard, too fast.

I'm not really helpful, but your post brought back those painful memories. I hope it's just some standard aches for you.

it might be the way u walk/run. go check with a specialist or something like a Running Room where they do a walk test with u n recommend a correct pair of running shoes for u. i had the samething n it was the wrong shoes. go see if thats the case with u

Sounds like shin splints. Best bet would be to see a physio about it.

There are several potential causes, but frequently it's too much, too soon, or wearing worn out or inappropriate shoes.

The main thing is to rest until the pain good, and great the cause not the symptom.

Thanks all. I was afraid it might mean rest :( I didn't want to stop running every other day because I might lose momentum, but I guess I'll have a few days break and see how they feel.

Thanks Beansz744. I do wear proper trail running shoes which feel really comfortable, but I got them online so haven't had a proper fitting. If it doesn't get better I'll find an actual running shop and ask advice.

Trail shoes tend to be neutral, so the value of a gait analysis is very limited. Personally I have several pairs that I select from based on the surface that I'll be running on.

While gait analysis is seen as a bit of a cure-all around here, I'm sceptical. I've bought shoes online for years and never had any problems. I'm an ultrarunner.

Once the pain has subsided, ease back in.

For someone who's been running for c8 -10 weeks 14-16 miles per week is a reasonably high volume. To put that in context, coaching someone for a half marathon I'd expect them to be at 20 miles per week at the start of the training.

Likely shin splints. Possible stress reaction.
