Post & Pre workout nutrition?

Any of you guys have tips for what I should be eating before and after my workouts? On my rest days I do cardio and tend not to eat anything before that and then after I'll just try to keep something low calorie. On active days (ie strength training) I take a glass of whey protein in water before and after exercise. Anything else I could be doing?

    Meal timing does not matter,so it comes down to personal preference...

    I eat 2 hours before lifting, then a protein bar after my workout. If I'm going home after my workout, I'll skip the protein bar and eat a full meal when I get home.

    I train in the evening and go home for dinner after. I don't particularly like eating close to training, so it'll either be completely fasted (for am training) or having had whatever meal was before that. All my meals have a decent amount of protein in them.

    See I wasn't sure if there was any general guidelines about what to be consuming before and after strength workouts vs cardio. I guess it doesn't really matter that much, from reading all your replies
