Hi all, sorry for the redundant post. I posted to the 'getting started' link but then I realized this was probably the better one.

I'm struggling SO much with my sugar addiction. I literally could eat a jar of nutella a day, i'm not kidding! the worst part is that, it makes me sick of course after I binge on all this sugar ( I don't ever purge or throw up, i just feel uncomfortable afterwards =(

i have been thinking a lot about the 'brain over binge' ideas, and I really liked reading this book. it talks about dismissing those urges to eat / binge on whatever unhealthy item. but I don't know why I'm so horrible with following this. =(

I think usually the place to start is to understand when you are consuming it and what is going on when you are consuming foods in an uncontrollable-feeling way: what specific foods? when? where? how are you feeling?

If you aren't totally sure, maybe think about it for a few days and journal when you have cravings (including the answer to those questions). I also found that just the process of journaling helped me feel control.

It's also important to consider other things that can make it easier or harder: where are you doing it can include why the food is accessible. But mainly I mean what else are you eating, do you have structure, are you satisfied or over-restricting, are you telling yourself never again (except after this one day once you mess up), how is your sleep and general stress level, things like that.

Sugar..very hard to beat especially if its readily available. If you say to yourself I don't need it. I don't need it. I don't need it. Can you control it? You ARE in control, nobody forces you to take it, when you feel like you are getting weak and go to reach for it stop. Stop and think. I don't need it. Its a battle of will power. You posted this question you know there is a problem, get rid of all the stuff you know isn't going to help you in your quest and if its not readily available then you won't reach for it.

For me the only thing that works is cutting out refined sugar entirely. It drives me bats for about two weeks and then I don't need it anymore and it even tastes bad. When I stop eating a bunch of sugar I also stop craving salty, fatty foods to go with the sugar.

At this point your body doesn't know what it really needs, you have to retrain it to crave foods that are actually good for you. When you crave Nutella, try breaking down what your body really wants, and eat that instead. Say, a piece of fruit and some nuts. Your body will figure out eventually that eating good food makes you feel good afterwards, and then these things will taste delicious.

Also don't buy it. There are plenty of people out there who can eat a little Nutella as part of a balanced diet, but you have admitted you are not one of them. It doesn't belong in your house while it's this big a problem for you. Instead, make sure the things you want to eat instead are in your house where you can easily eat them.
