Heat or Cold for Groin Injury?

Hi
I've pulled a muscle in groin and it's agony. Any idea whether ice packs or heat is actually better for it?
Also does anyone know which of the muscle gel/creams are safe to use if you have an allergy to Ibuprofen? Most seem to advice not to use if you've ever had an allergic reaction to it, even if there isn't any in the listed ingredients???
Would have rather just use a cream direct on area it hurts than having to use painkillers.
Thanks

alternate heat and ice1

RICE - rest, ice, compression, elevate.
Ice for 20-30 minutes every 3 to 4 hours.0 -
I assume you've seen your doctor? If not. Try that for step one0

Physio would be my go to.0

Rang but soonest they can fit me in is next week. Rather not be in pain the entire time till then! Just trying to work out whether ice or heat would be the most effective in the meantime.0 -

No idea how long a referral for physio would take! probably a few months I'd hope it would be healed and not be in pain by then!0 -

Ice if it is a full belly muscle tear imediately. Otherwise continue with training at a level you don't break form with some stretching afterwards. Rest, eat, repeat.

Do you mean these?

Pain is right in area just at top of leg where it bends so difficult to bandage and for it to stay on.0 -

I can barely walk to get to loo from the bed let alone exercise, it's agony to weight bear but no pain when laid down. It's kind of under tummy just in crease where top of leg joins body. I'm on max dose of painkillers per day but can't take anything with Ibuprofen in. was going to just use one of those muscle rub creams but they all seem to say not to use if you've ever had an allergic reaction to Ibuprofen, even though they don't actually list it as an ingredient in the cream??? ..which seems really weird???0 -

i'd be asking for an emergency appointment with the doctors if its that bad, and not accepting something in a weeks time.

how long would it usually take for a pulled muscle in groin to heal after rest and painkillers?0

how long is a piece of string? depends on the severity, how much 'rest' you can give it (can you not walk for a week so it can heal for example) etc etc
and then after that, you have to think about how to prevent it happening again, which is where seeing a physio comes in.0 -
alot of advice online says to take NSAIDS such as Ibuprofen, most of which I'm allergic to unfortunately so looks like it's gonna be a long slow process.
wondering if Turmeric capsules will work as Turmeric is meant to be a natural anti inflammatory and I know I'm not allergic to it. just depends what other ingredients they add to the capsules!0 -

Are you allergic? or "Allergic"
I have an NSAID sensitivity that interacts with my respiration and reflux, that the allergist basically said is almost like an allergy, but not actually an allergy... Regardless.
I get some benefit from Turmeric, Cinnamon, and Boswellia.0 -

this is working on the basis that it is a pulled muscle... you still need an actual diagnosis.2 -

I've had full blown Anaphylaxis from medication with Ibuprofen in (rushed to hospital for Adrenaline as throat was swelling up) in the past and also had a reaction to a muscle cream a friend gave me even though it didn't list Ibuprofen in the ingredients on the tube I found a pdf file on it online which says it does contain it.
I've looked up several different brands now and even though none actually list Ibuprofen in the ingredients some say not to use if you've ever had an allergic reaction to it??? If it's in the cream why don't they list it as an ingredient on the back of the tube???
Are they seperate capsules the Turmeric, Cinnamon and Boswellia?0 -

There are easily a dozen different meds that can trigger an asprin/ibuprofen anaphylactic episode, and another handful of herbs that will set it off... that's why it's considered a family aversion or allergy..
Yes, I would recommend hitting examine.com to do your own research regarding safe/effective dosages...
Unfortunately, coming off an injury isn't the best time to experiment with anti-inflammatories.
As far as topicals, some of the capsaicin topical treatments can be used... Sombra is one that I've found effective, but all the rubs generally do is stimulate healing and numbness...

If you're cross reactive(NSAIDS) AKA psuedoallergic or averse vs allergic(single substance--Ibuprofen) the above list will be helpful..1 -

It's complicated. Have you seen an allergist, have they confirmed that you're allergic to ibuprofen or have they stated that you are reactive or sensitive to NSAIDS?
There's a huge difference.
Bottom line is, if you don't know for certain.... stay away from anything on the list.0 -
Never heat. It makes the inflammation worse and the injury can't heal. Cold if you can stand it

Mine too... It makes the inflammation worse... by drawing blood to the area... promoting healing.... Cold and compression then reduce the swelling, accelerating the overall healing cycle and improving function...
Not sure that this applies on a pure muscle strain like groin, but I know for joint(knee, ankle, elbow) it has merit.0 -

I hate to say it, but this sounds a lot like a pelvic stress fracture. Get to a doctor next week. It won't show on an x-ray, but an MRI might show it. My orthopedist was able to diagnose mine based on the fact that it didn't hurt when my leg wasn't weight bearing, but was agony when I was standing. I couldn't do the 'hop test' at all. If so, you'll need to do complete non-weight bearing for several months. Don't do PT without seeing a doctor, as you can make it much worse by stressing the bone. Some have to use crutches. I didn't, but I also extended the duration of my injury by not resting completely when told to do so. (I didn't think gentle walking was real exercise, until I couldn't do it without pain.) My orthopedist told me I could do stationary recumbent bike or pool running, but that was all. It can be a slow injury to heal, especially if not diagnosed from the start.2 -

Our physio gets us to alternate heat/cold as well.
My husband is currently being seen for tendinitis along his metatarsals and has been given that same advice.0 -
I read online cold to reduce initial swelling then heat to get blood circulating again after a couple of days. But also that inflammation is the bodies response to pain so I guess unless I can get the pain levels down and get any period of relief I'm not going to see much change in the inflammation anyway?0
