Struggling

I have been dieting on and off about 8 yr. I've lost about 35 lbs and have now gained back about 15 lbs. I'm so discouraged. I just can't seem to get back on track.
Any ideas?

Setup your MFP account here, Start logging your foods to see where your calories are. Get a food scale if you can to help make sure you are logging accurately. Log your exercising as well but be careful not to overestimate calories burned.

Hi Vicky! I'm sorry you're having such a tough time. Could you be more specific about what you've been doing to lose weight, what has helped in the past, what is tripping you up now?

The main thing that dieters who succeed long term have in common is that they regard their diet as a permanent lifestyle change, not as a temporary phase.

If you've been at it for 8 years...I'm not really sure there's a track to get back on. That's not necessarily a bad thing. Why don't you think of this as a fresh start? Figure out WHY you want to lose this weight, and remember that. Every day, eat less than it takes to maintain your weight. If you make a mistake, THEN you get back on track, the very next day :)

Thanks, I think I've made mistakes then figure why bother. I'm not sure why I have that mentality. I know better. With every pound I think to myself, well I'll get back on track tomorrow. Tomorrow never comes. I so appreciate the words of encouragement. Thank you!

Agree, set yourself up on MFP. Keep a food journal, get a food scale and start working. Calculate a modest calorie deficit.

If you aren't exercising, start walking regularly. I'd leave activity out of my calculations for now.
These are things that facilitate weight loss.

Also agree you should spend some time thinking about your long term goal and why you want it.
Maybe write it down and put it somewhere will you will see it several times per day.

Then work on your thinking. You're 100% right. The way to derail yourself is a 2 step process in your head. "You aren't doing it right." "So why bother?"

Almost all weight loss efforts fail because people are done in by their own brain. Monitor your thinking. Be on the lookout for negative thinking. Watch out for thoughts that losses are too small or it's taking too long. Those are classic WL fail thoughts.

Cliche alert- we all make mistakes. Even you. You're human, give yourself a break. If WL was easy everybody would do it. You have to learn it. I don't know the origin of this but something that helped me was the saying "Perfection is the enemy of the good." You only need to be good enough. Good luck.
