Anyone do yoga for weight loss? How often and long do you do it?

I was doing some at home yoga from a video.

Yoga is great for stretching, relaxation, breathing, focus, fitness and lots more but for weight loss you need a calorie deficit. It doesn't matter how much yoga or any exercise you do; if you consume more calories than you burn you won't lose a single pound in weight. That's what MFP is all about, counting your calories.

I don't do very strenuous yoga so I don't log/eat back any exercise calories at all from my yoga. For me, yoga is great for complementing all the other exercise I've done throughout my weight loss (45lbs to date thanks to counting calories). I love Yoga with Adriene. She had great tutorials for all levels.

    Good luck!

There are benefits to doing yoga but it isn't a big calorie burner so it isn't very helpful in weightless. It does help you stay strong and flexible so you don't get hurt and have to stop doing the calorie burning exercises.

In general, yoga is not directly a big calorie burner. Some forms of yoga are much more aerobic than others, but your average at-home DVD yoga workout is not.

However, there are ways that really help promote weight loss:

    * Yoga can be a good strength workout - even if MFP doesn't list it as such. (Pet peeve) All those plank poses and bridges are strength-building.
    * Yoga reduces stress. Many of us gained weight through stress eating.
    * Yoga works on flexibility. Too many people work out and build muscle but fail to work on doing things like working on range of motion or even cause back pain. It helps prevent injury.
