OK for what? If you want to lose weight, you have to limit calorie intake. There is no IF police.5

Ok to drink without breaking fast.
Yes OP, yes it is okay. You can have coffee and other zero/very low calorie drinks while fasting.2 -

It's mainly all about calories in and calorie expenditure, a plain cup of brewed coffee has less than 5 calories. So if you look at it from a lifestyle point of view, you shouldn't feel limited in anyway. It should be ok to have your black Americano coffee so long as you are hitting your desire calories at the end of the day.
Also the best way to keep on top of this is to watch how your body responds to changes you make, e.g. if you goal is losing weight and you've added coffee during your fasting period, for the next few weeks also track if it has made any changes to the rate you were losing weight before. If you feel it has affected it the take it out and try something else.
Remember everyone reacts differently to different things, you are unique so it best to start tracking what certain foods, beverages do to you own physiology as well as psychology.0 -
Depending on which IF plan or program you're following...
1. Black Coffee should almost always be permitted.
2. BulletProof Coffee may also be acceptable.1 -

The idea behind intermittent fasting is to have an eating schedule that is more manageable for you by consolidating calories. Coffee doesn't have a lot of calories, so it shouldn't affect the goal behind intermittent fasting. Drink away.3

This, and another idea is that for a lot of people not eating means that you extend the period in which you don't think about food/are not hungry. Coffee generally doesn't trigger hunger (although if it did it wouldn't work for you during a "fasting" period).1 -
I've read many articles that says if you are under 50 calories, you have not broken your fast. I have read other articles that says you are not breaking your fast if you are under 100 calories. Who makes the rules? I don't have a clue. I just ate a 93 calories beef jerky stick. Did I break my fast? Maybe. But it's only one day. But I always drink black coffee.1

A fast is not a leg. Break away.3

Agree. There is no need to be militant about IF

I fast 20:4 and totally support it but IF is just a tool that helps some people who enjoy larger meals to better adhere to their calorie goals by limiting their feeding window. IF does zero extra for weight loss. It has zero scientifically proven additional health benefits. Most of the health benefits that get promoted by IF supporters like Fung (quack) occur when anyone is in a prolonged calorie deficit coupled with exercise. Weight loss comes strictly from a calorie deficit. If coffee and egg whites do not put you in a caloric surplus, your results will be the same.1

Well, technically, egg whites are "BCAA"0 -
The IF police will most definitely come get you and throw you in the clink if you do.0

What's the physiological effect of having, say, 60 calories during your fast window that doesn't occur if you only have 40 calories? Because if there isn't one, this is just an arbitrary rule by would-be IF police.3 -

No idea if there is any science behind it. I'm just passing on what I've read on IF sites
