Do I need a day of recovery after a heavy workout?

I am 245 lbs, 45 years of age and for the most part have led a fairly sedentary lifestyle the past several years...
After a high intensity workout such as a crossfit class, or 30 minutes on the ellipitical followed by a high intensity weight session, should I be spending the next day allowing my body to recover by either not exercising or just walking? At least until I shed more pounds?
I am concerned that at my age and physical condition I may end up stressing something.

If you are working the same muscle groups during each workout you need to give them time to recover. If you are only working specific groups (i.e. upper body one day, lower body the next, upper, lower, etc.) you should be fine.0
