Ladies: Can You Relate to These Health Concerns?

Sorry for the long post in advance... I can't believe I'm about to share this because it's super gross and personal, but since my picture and last name are not on here I'm just going to go with it. Before starting MFP, I lived on a strict diet of chocolate, chocolate, and more chocolate. I lived on the couch. Now, I eat sweets once or twice a week, exercise 3 to 4 times a week, and stay as active as I can: right now, I'm redo-ing an old porch swing. I am a vegetarian (and I was before, it's just that I ate crap), and I actually eat healthy foods. I now weigh 134.

But the past two weeks, I have developed a severe constipation issue that resulted in hemorrhoids. It is still really uncomfortable to use the restroom. Yesterday, I started my first period in over a year. I don't have periods because I am on a birth control that stops them. I'm just a little bit weirded out. I'm going to the doctor on Thursday to see what's up.

I don't want any diagnoses, just if you had a similar experience could you tell me what it was and what the outcome ended up being? And any suggestions on the questions I should ask my doctor?

Thanks

I'm on Mirena. I only had a period last year after a miscarriage. My doctor wanted to wait a month before putting a new one back in. But I had another one for 5 years previously. No intermittent bleeding. This is my concern as far as periods go.

I had random bleeding while on Mirena, but it ended up having to do with my Thyroid. Haven't had any issues since they upped my medication for hypothyroidism though. I haven't had any of the other issues you talked about, but I would make sure your doctor runs blood tests as well. Losing weight can throw off hormones as well as different body systems.

Are you suddenly low fat with your new dietary changes?

Eating plenty of chocolate would mean you had plenty of fat in your diet and fat is essential since it's one of the building blocks for hormones in your body. If you suddenly switched to a low-fat lifestyle it would explain both the constipation and hormone imbalance. Make sure you are getting plenty of nuts or avocado or coconut oil, etc.

Are you certain it's your period and not just bleeding from the hemorrhoids? How long has it been since you started eating differently? The last time I had to get a colonoscopy it was due to diet. I wasn't eating right, and it took a couple of weeks for the bowel pain to go away once I changed my diet.

I'm not on BC. and I have my period every 28 days or 24 days, can't remember.

Right before my period (and ovulation) I get backed up. For 2 or 3 days even. Then after me period starts, it's like a dam broke. I think it's hormones for me.

When I was pregnant I had a really bad time. :(. I took a baking soda bath like what you do for a constipated baby and that worked. Gross because you have to clean out the tub, but better than what I was going through for sure!

I even shared it with my midwife and she is going to start suggesting it to pregnant moms if they have the same problem.

(So glad I'm done having kids)

I used to be really constipated. I take Miralax every day with a full sports bottle of water. I also swim every day, which keeps me regular.

My body got all messed up after I had children and I was constipated a lot. I have now gone through menopause and the exercise and Miralax help. If I don't exercise on Sundays, I sometimes don't go to the bathroom that day.

In the past, I have also taken a Fiber Con once a day at night.

The Miralax will keep your stool soft so you don't get hemmorhoids.

Oh, and I eat about 8-10 servings of veggies a day.

    Good luck!

I had a bout of constipation a couple years ago... I'm not sure what caused it. It was very random. It lasted a few months. I tried supplements and prunes. But what really worked for me was fiber one, that weird looking cereal that looks like duck food or something. (Well, upping my fiber in general, but that cereal has a TON) and drinking lots of water. It totally fixed my problem and I was going like clockwork.

And speaking of clock work, on the weekends when I got "off schedule" I would have issues going again. It was weird. But I was ok being regular 5 days a week.

For some reason when I got pregnant I stopped having issues. Strange, as it is usually the opposite for most women.

Sometimes overtraining and under-eating cause constipation, possibly unrelated to your cycle? Are you eating in a deficit or at maintenance? Maybe try a diet break if ur eating at a calorie deficit? My digestion has slowed down the longer I've stayed in deficit, and eating at maintenance seems like it might be helping 'move things along'. Also water, prunes, and Metamucil!
