"How would you describe your normal daily activities?

Sedentary: Spend most of the day sitting (e.g. bank teller, desk job)

Lightly Active: Spend a good part of the day on your feet (e.g. teacher, salesperson)

Active: Spend a good part of the day doing some physical activity (e.g. food server, postal carrier)

Very Active: Spend most of the day doing heavy physical activity (e.g. bike messenger, carpenter)"

This doesn't factor in exercise routines, those are logged separately, but the descriptions from the settings page should help. Where is your confusion?

MFP uses the NEAT method so as explained by @Jadedinosaur you need to pick the most appropriate level for your home/school/work life.

MFP then uses this activity level to multiply your BMR (Your calorie burn for basic bodily functions) to give you an approximate burn for your non-exercise related activity. Sedentary being BMR x 1.25, if you set it too low, you will end up with a lower calorie count and will end up losing weight at a faster rate than you have chosen, if you set it too high, you will end up losing weight at a slower rate than you have chosen.

Pick the most appropriate, review your weight loss after 3-4 weeks of logging and you will know if you have the right level.

Alternatively if you have a fitness tracker connected and enable negative adjustments, this is all moot as it will adjust correctly based on your calories burned and activity level across the day whether you have it set as Sedentary or Active.
