Logging and hitting my calorie goals worked for me. I began in January of 2015, lost over 40 pounds by September/October 2015, and have been maintaining that weight loss since then.3

MFP works if you work it properly. This means entering the correct stats and activity level, trusting the numbers, accurately entering exercise, and accurately weighing, measuring, and logging your food.
People run into problems when they try to "out think" MFP by consistently eating too little (which often ends up in binges) not weighing the food, not logging everything, and just plain thinking they know more than the algorithms.2 -
yes starting logging Nov 2016 and I have lost 30lbs and I still get to eat whatever I wanted I don't work out but I do try to get in at least 6k-10k steps per day and it seems to be working for me3

Logging help me to stay mindful of what I'm eating. It's very easy to just grab a few nuts, a handful of crackers, a 'decent-sized' scoop of egg salad, pour 'some' salad dressing, etc. And by the time supper rolls around, I might have forgotten everything else I ate today or, at least, the portion sizes. I don't speak for everyone, but I gained a lot of weight eating immoderate amounts of 'healthy' food. Not saying that I passed up dessert or never had a salad-bowl's worth of pasta in a restaurant... but by-and-large, I wasn't gorging myself on french fries and Twinkies. When I log, I'm very aware of what I'm eating and I know how many calories to eat to lose sensibly. I've also started paying attention to my protein and iron intake. (The other macros and micros aren't that concerning to me at the moment. Down the road, that may change). Believe me, before I started logging I never realized I was getting less than half my iron RDA.
The weight is dropping and I'm making better food choices now. And I don't stress as much. If the scale tells me something I don't like, but I know I was hitting my calorie targets... then the culprit probably wasn't the lone160-calorie cookie I had that didn't put me over target. It's water weight or time of month or overall, my logging was loose, etc.
Yes, MFP works for me.5 -
calorie deficit works. MFP is a free and reliable tool to help you stick to the calorie deficit. In and of itself, it does nothing. However, for me, it's been a great tool to help me eat mindfully and track what I eat.3
