I ate a whole lot of sriracha hot sauce yesterday and I gained 3 pounds!

I didn't log all of the sriracha on my fitness pal but it's 5 calories for 1 teaspoon. It's also a whole lot of sodium. Has anybody else gained 3 pounds in 1 day?

It's the sodium.
Lots of people experience water weight gain when they eat more sodium than they're used to.
If you eat a ton of condiments, they can add up. You may want to consider logging them.3 -
yes. weight fluctuates throughout the day and between days - its normal.1

I'm assuming you didn't eat the sriracha straight, and I'm also assuming you didn't eat over 2,000 servings of it, which is how much you would have had to consumed to see a true weight gain of 3 lbs (10,500 cals above maintenance).
Weight fluctuates for a lot of reasons, one of the biggest of which is water retention which sodium can be a culprit.
This is normal and not something to be concerned with.

All that sodium is going to make you retain fluids. It's scary to see how weight can fluctuate due to that.1

Body weight fluctuates naturally...it may or may not have anything to do with your Sriracha. I can be up or down anywhere from 0-5 Lbs day to day.chelseahatch24 wrote: »All that sodium is going to make you retain fluids. It's scary to see how weight can fluctuate due to that.
It's not really scary...our bodies are doing what they're supposed to be doing and you will always have fluctuations regardless of sodium, etc...our bodies are made up of anywhere between 50-65% water and that will always fluctuate all on it's own...not to mention variable degrees of inherent waste in the system, etc.
This is why trend analysis is important...the actual numbers are just data points and people shouldn't get too absorbed in them.1 -
Perfectly normal even without extra sodium.

You took my comment out of context. Although that's very interesting info, that's not what I was getting at. Lol.0 -

Sorry about that, I've been here for years and I tend to take a comment at face value...i.e. "it's scary"...because in fact, there are a lot of people who are scared of and don't understand that body weight isn't static and fluctuates all over the place throughout the day and day to day...they are legit "scared" and do weird things like go do a bunch of exercise that wasn't planned or fast or whatever...all over a normal weight fluctuation.0 -

I'm definitely used to my weight going back and forth. I've learned to live with it. In the end, I end up losing it.0
