to retain lean body mass while in a calorie deficit. when you lose weight, it's not only fat that drops off. it's also muscle (including organs like the heart) which can lose mass. making sure you're eating adequate protein and doing some resistance and strength training can help you to minimize these losses while losing fat (which is more of the ultimate goal than weight).6
