Struggling when at a friends place.

So, I'll do really well and then we go over to a friends house.
Example: We went over to a friends house last night to visit and they ordered Papa Johns for dinner and then a tub of candy was pulled out while we played games. They were also stocked full of soda and made me mudslides.
I managed to stay out of the candy but did have three pieces of pizza and two pieces of cheesy bread. I also broke down and had a soda with dinner instead of water. I finished the evening with a giant mudslide too.
This happens at other friends houses too. I'll do really well and then they'll have chicken alfredo, cheese dip, and chocolate cake.
How do I politely get around all of these temptations? I know myself. Portion and self control go right out the window. Plus, when I do try to be good I get the feeling that I've insulted them somehow by saying no to another pass of food.k
Help.

Drink a lot of water or zero calorie drinks, and bring your own snacks if need be.
Let them know you are following a strict diet. I let all my friends know that so they are not offended when I turn down things. In fact, many will not offer to me anymore because sometimes that in itself if too tempting.
Once in a while is ok, but that once in a while leads to some big setbacks for many (me included) which is why I've even removed cheat days now.0
