Hi all
Ummm I actually don't know how much I am eating. But it is definitely restricted. I know I should start tracking. But in the meanwhile how can I overcome my urges. I get like really really hungry. Today I feel like I want to eat anything in sight. I did end up eating eggs with a toast. Anyway any recommendations? How do I curb my hunger?

Make sure you're not setting your deficit too high...

    Weigh and measure everything.

How long have you been losing weight for?
For me it took about 2 weeks to stop wanting to eat as much as I used to.
Try drinking more water to stop your stomach being empty :)

There's a theory that eating bland foods will help with hunger spikes and binges during a cut. More info in the linked article.

well number one...you have to track...and track accurately. buy a food scale. weigh things raw before cooking and look up if possible a USDA food entry to log.

you "MAY have a bunch of cals" to eat stating you are definitely restricted..but you won't know until you log.

    LOG then re-access your hunger.

proteins like beef/chicken/fish tend to help satiate your. maybe you need more protein...something logging will tell you.

thats all for now till you actually get to work and do the work.

For sure track. You have no idea if you're undereating causing your body to be really hungry.

Im working on identifying if I'm actually hungry or just want to eat because it's comfort.

    Definitely see a nutritionist.

OP what do you mean by definitely restricted? If you are severely limiting your diet your body is telling you to eat for a reason. If it is just your body getting used to a reasonable deficit it shouldn't last more than a few days

First step is to make sure that you're eating enough so that you know you shouldn't be satisfying those hunger pangs. You could be well under eating and your body is simply telling you. You'll never know unless you calculate your targets and log your meals.

Once you know that you're actually eating enough to be healthy and that the hunger pangs are more mental than anything else, then you can start trying things to curb those cravings. I surround myself with healthy low calorie snacks (celery, cottage cheese, etc.), allow myself to only eat half a serving at first (for example, 10 almonds or 1/4 cup of cottage cheese), and force myself to eat it slowly. If I'm still hungry, then I'll have the other half of the serving.

The small serving size and slow eating usually works to satisfy the part of my brain that really wants a snack and even if I go back for the rest of the serving, I know that the snack really didn't do much damage at all since it was a healthy food. I'll adjust for those 100 calories over the rest of the day.

Alternatively, you may be a grazer. Try eating 5-6 small meals throughout the day instead of 2-3 larger ones.

Finally, protein is your friend. It's more filling than carbs and should keep you satisfied longer. Try making your meals more lean protein centric and see if that helps.

natasha, you're going to have to tell more if you want us to do anything other than speculate.

    How much do you weigh?
OK, you're 55 or 56. I can figure that out from your username, so breastfeeding, pregnancy and probably time-of-month are not concerns.

If you're not logging your food, what are you eating? How much? Are you simply trying to "jump start" this process because of something you saw in a magazine rack or on a television show?

We are blind here. Help us out.

If eating eggs and toast seems like a big deal then my guess is you are severely restricting. You need to start tracking to figure out how much you're actually eating...it's probably very little so being really hungry would be pretty normal.

Keeping busy is one of the best ways to avoid eating/being hungry. Boredom eating is huge

There are times, after I have had all the food I am allowed for the day, I will wake up middle of the night hungry. I try to ignore it, but I truly believe I am waking up because I am truly hungry. I will take 1 slice of whole wheat bread with nothing on it. I eat it, and I feel my stomach not growling. I am guessing way better than chowing down on a pint of ice cream, cookies, or a sandwich.

I find that if I start running up too large a daily deficit, mostly due to exercise but also due to not eating enough, I will wake up anywhere from 11pm to 2 am starving. If I go downstairs where food is I will eat crackers or chocolate that tamps down my hunger. Last night it happened again but I was able to go back to sleep but I was really hungry. Could also be you aren't eating enough carbs too.

Eat more fats, they keep you full much longer. Have celery or cucumber with some almond butter....keeps you full and satisfied
