Trolls - At Least Make Them Work For It

I'm frequently amazed at how far a troll can get on these message boards. Create a new account, grab any old pic of the Internet and say something inflammatory...sit back while the clueless rant and rave.

I have no idea what is so entertaining about doing this, but it's done here many times a day, that I notice.

One of the easiest ways of spotting a troll is to use a reverse image search. With a reverse image search, you can find everywhere on the Internet that any particular image is used. So, when you check out a profile pic and find that it actually belongs to a fitness model, a porn star, or some misc. chick from a site about home wreckers (I've seen all of these recently) you can be pretty sure the person is a troll.

Now, I'm not saying I've never been fooled, but a huge number of trolls can be weeded out by this one simple method.

Maybe we need a topic here on how to spot a troll and what to do when you do.

I can usually tell without searching the image. It's what they say and how they say it.

What I find amusing is when regularly participating community members are called trolls just because they said something that the OP didn't want to hear.

    But that's MFP for ya!

Maybe it is that we can spot the trollz peeps, but we find the thread entertaining.
there's a thread "being called fat is as bad as being called the n word" going on right now, I should be one of the first one offended

    but

it's friday afternoon, I'm bored at work, most of the websites are blocked, so I enjoy those threads. it's entertaining. it's harmless. and there's air popped popcorn in the vending machine. 100-cal a bag plus veggies and cheese. I'm living the life.

I'm waiting for them to put wine in the vending machines too.

you're like a jedi with this stuff....i need to sit back and learn from you.
i will likely be consulting you on all future outbursts that i have prepared in response to a ridiculous thread.
had i done this prior to responding to the "fat is the new n-word" or whatever thread, i would have saved myself the humiliation (which is grave btw).

    ^^^This^^^

By the way I don't even think it is even a big deal if a conversation about a topic was actually started by a troll. As long as all the participants are mindful of the fact that it is just an internet forum discussion and remain mature the troll become nothing more than an affectation at that point.

Yeah, it's a good pastime for a Friday afternoon.

I have to say I am impressed with the amount of hard work that these people go through to get their entertainment. Setting up a complete profile, filling in a diary going at least a week back...

Can you imagine how productive the world economy would be if people actually WORKED on Fridays instead of setting up sock puppet acc'ts on MFP? We would have world peace and prosperity already.

I used to think I could, but the depth of stupidity I've seen makes me thing that some of the most absurd statements are sincerely meant.

well, I meant, just going through the threads and reading everyone's post is entertaining. I'd be a lame troll. like, I'd post a "y'all ugly on here" thread or something.

i had a thought. I would be willing to bet these cases rise in the summer time when kiddies are on break, and decline when they go back to school. More research is needed.

Cruelest thing you can do to a troll is pay no attention to them whatsoever.

Yeh, same here. My expectations are pretty low so I have to do some research to detect manufactured stupidity from the genuine variety.
