Do you skip breakfast and have it for lunch and eat light or nothing for dinner? Do you set a limit?

I don't do "cheat" days/meals, but if I have a day where I know I'm not going to be within my calories I eat lighter that morning, exercise more, or save some calories from the days leading up to it.

I incorporate the foods I like/want/crave into my every day. I just make sure I have a proper portion that stays within my calorie goals for the day. Its far too easy for a "cheat day" to mentally let you think you can just eat anything and wipe out a full weeks worth of work. (or more depending).

This way I also learn NOW, how to eat properly at places with foods that are excessive in calories. Im learning what to order and from where so that when I reach my goal, all I have to do is stay within my maintenance calories.

if you have the willpower, you could always split the meal in half and take half home for another meal. If you think you would eat too much, then either plan for the extra calories or avoid ordering that meal.

what matters most is what will work for YOU, and will it keep you happy?

Yes! I definitely eat lighter during the day and if possible, get extra exercise. And who knows, maybe you'll get that 1500 calorie entree (don't get an appetizer or drink high calorie beverages) and find that you don't want to finish it! WIn, win!

I personally don't need or even want for that matter a "cheat" day but if I did I would perform some extra exercise that day to cover the additional calories.

Looking at the menu/nutrition ahead of time really changes your outlook on the place/what you would order doesnt it.

I normally dont care about sodium at all. I am almost always under or around the recommended levels. One meal at a place i was going to go to was literally 5 times the daily recommended amount. it was essentially a salt stick with other flavoring.

My cheat day advice is, "Don't"

Maybe not what you wanted to hear/see/read, but that's the advice. I'm gonna be 'cold' and bullet point out some uncomfortable thoughts

    - the word cheat implies doing something wrong. This is the opposite of loving yourself
    - It reinforces the eating behaviors that made you go on a "diet" to begin with
    - Weight loss is about lifestyle change. Is it healthy to still being doing "cheat" days 10 years in the future, mentally?
    - If you over eat you're going to undo the calorie deficit you worked so hard to build earlier in the week
    - If there are foods you're craving just have... *A PORTION* of them. No need to "cheat". Eat at a normal calorie level.

I have a day once a week where I go out to a meal at local restaurant, and a hopefully really good one (pdx are foodies). I always have whatever i want during that meal. apps, drinks, dessert etc. I dont care about calories. For the rest of that day I eat my normal meals. I dont skip. I lost 100 pounds doing this. I dont agree that it ruins a whole weeks worth of work. Others have different opinions. You have find what works, but stressing over food isnt healthy imo. Make mindful choices and enjoy yourself.

    Chili's Menu
    App
    California grilled chicken flat bread
    Meal
    Smothered Smoked chicken burrito
    Dessert
    Molten Chocolate Cake
    Drink
    32oz coke

Sounds like a pretty normal meal for people to have right. I didnt even pick the highest calorie options. Just something along the lines of what I might have had without thinking. Not that bad right?

California grilled chicken flat bread - 1730
Smothered Smoked chicken burrito - 1210
    Molten Chocolate Cake - 1150
    32oz coke - 310
    Total Calories - 4400

If someone was trying to lose weight at 1600 calories per day with a 500 calorie deficit, that is a 2800 overage. That one meal wipes out 5.6 days of deficit.

And remember that its not forever. I dont know what your weight loss per week goal is, but when you reach your goal weight you will get to start eating those calories for maintenance. So what is 1200 calories this visit .. in the future might be 1700 or 2200 giving you more room to enjoy different foods. Its just the weight loss pinching right now. It WILL get better!

I think you missed the line that @besaro wrote that says 'make mindful choices' just to prove your point...

I just eat...sometimes I over indulge, but it's not a regular thing...it's called life and enjoying it, not cheating.
