Will drinking diet soda help me lose weight

So I have an addiction to soda and have for years and drink around 30 cans a week. I am desperate to stop however I have a tendency to relapse and drink more than I did before. It would be ideal for me to stop completely but I'm scared I won't be able to do it. I drink around 4200 calories of soda a week would much change if I switched to diet soda

    As long as you don't replace those calories with other food/drinks and it puts you in a deficit

    If you replace 30 cans of soda(4200 calories) with diet soda (120 calories) then you will reduce calorie consumption by 4080 calories a week and lose a little over 1lb a week if you make no other changes.

    P.s. you are not addicted to soda but you may be addicted to caffeine.

    I think that drinking your calories is such a waste, and if I can drink something that tastes good without the calories, then I'd rather do that and save my calories for food. I don't drink diet soda very often, but I do drink other "diet" drinks - like those packets you mix with water.

    It doesn't seem to do anything magical in terms of weight loss (I consider it neutral), but it DOES help me avoid extra sugar that I don't need in my life. It would help you lose weight if it contributes to your overall calorie deficit (for example, you replace sugar soda with diet, thereby slashing unnecessary calories). But if you tell yourself you're drinking diet so you think you can splurge on more crap (and end up replacing those calories), it won't help. Some people say that diet drinks give them cravings. I have never noticed any extra cravings.

    It depends on how many calories you're consuming vs. how many you need to consume to lose weight. That's a hell of a lot of calories in soda that you would be saving. 30 cans of diet would still probably be excessive, but calorie-wise, it's better than regular.

    Whether it "helps" you or not depends on you. If you replace regular soda with diet soda and decrease your overall calorie consumption by that number, the switch is helping. If, like me, drinking diet coke makes you ravenously hungry, diet soda will work to sabotage your self control. The only way you will know is by trying it. I finally gave up all artificial sweeteners because the sweet taste without calories gave me the munchies. I now drink flavored seltzers with no sweeteners. Other folks don't experience this.

    I love this because it can show how different people are. When I started drinking diet soda my cravings decreased, my reaction was the opposite of yours.

    If absolutely nothing else changed in your diet you would definitely start losing - or at the very least stop gaining weight - depending on how many calories you consume for the rest of your daily/weekly intake.

    However, if the change to diet drinks causes other changes in your daily/weekly intake the results may vary. I drink carbonated diet beverages once in a while just because it's different. Also note that the taste may be noticeably different enough that you won't like the diet.
