sugar

I am allowed 24 grams of sugar a day...a small apple is 22 grams of sugar...I believe that sugar from fruit is different and should be counted differently than sugar from icecream...or candy....how can I stay within 24 grams of sugar a day if I wanted to eat 2 servings of fruit, I would be over!

You don't need to count the sugar that occurs naturally in foods.

If it's not necessary to track sugar from fruit why is it included in most fruits listed in the database?

    Sugar isn't really sugar. Ever.

Like sugar from sugar beets? Or cane sugar?

You should take in account the sugar that you ingest, regardless of the source.
Yes, in a piece of fruit, besides the sugar, you also benefit from the fibers, the vitamins, the minerals, the phytoelements, etc. But there is still sugar in it. Sugar that your body will use as fuel.

Sugar that you will find in, let's say, ice cream will also be used as fuel by your body. But along with it comes fat and protein from the dairy and eggs, and processed chemicals.

    Or...here is an idea...

Ignore the sugar intake unless you have a medical reason for doing so. Sugar is a carb, so track your carbs.

Don't worry about it. Fruit is healthy.

Is there a medical reason your monitoring your sugar? if not then don't count sugar that comes from fruit.

Yes, it is the same sugar whether it is fruit or ice cream.

For some reason, some less than astute person saw this and decided to cut fruit instead of resuming ice cream.

    People can be irrational.

Thats right ^ Track the carbs and keep the carbs low!

Any carb that is from fiber is a "free carb".

to keep things less complicated, just make sure you are sustaining a calorie deficit while not feeling hungry.

The sugar recommendation is based on the US recommendation for added sugar, not natural sugar. There is no agreed upon standard for natural sugar. MFP diaries do not discern between natural and added sugar, so fruit will blow your sugar out of the water, even though it is healthy and you should eat it. Unless you have a medical need (which is why it is included in the first place), most of us don't bother to track sugar.
  • Thanks everyone! This was very helpful! I believe i will just not record my sugar intake here...

Unless you have a medial reason to track sugar, you don't need to track sugar.
