I am 56, just started body pump, I love it, twice a week, and spin. Do you think it is best to put heavy weights on, or lighter weights but more reps.

in those classes it's recommended to put on lighter to moderate weight and perform all the reps at the same intensity.

it is simply too difficult to monitor each individuals progress in a large group class and lifting "heavy" is a great way to injure yourself (especially in a group setting where beginners cant be thoroughly watched and want to get competitive).

At your age it's important to perform resistance training for strong and healthy bones, and it sounds like you're doing just that. so great job! :)

In addition to the above, i'm just going to add that about 50% of the people i see in BP classes have poor form. Usually on squats, but also on the deadrow, lunges, etc. At the very least i suggest watching some youtube videos on how to squat. Also video your own squat form. :+1:

in body pump, its better to go low weight more reps since it is more of a cardio type class. But start out slow, don't worry about getting as many reps as the teacher or the rest of the class for a few months. When you first start its really important to let your body get adjusted to the new movements or you will be sore and your joints will not be happy.
