Concerned and frustrated

2 years ago I broke my ankle and had a plate and 8 screws put in to repair the fracture.
After a year of PT and working toward running, I've been running for about a year, virtually pain free. That is until yesterday
I went out for an easy 6 miles and around mile 2.5 my ankle started hurting every time I took a step. I walked a bit and tried again, nope still there. I walked back to my car in quite a bit of pain and the pain did not go away all day. It almost feels like a tendon could be rubbing over the hardware. It's a strange painful feeling. My ankle was a bit swollen but nothing alarming.
I have an email out to my orthopedist, but in the mean time has anyone experienced this kind of pain? I do have new shoes and I run consistently and lift consistently. I also swim one to two times a week. And I'll be taking some time off until I hear from my DR.
So frustrating!
I haven't experienced this kind of pain in a long time.

Not to worry you more, but my friend had broken her back years ago (and had a metal plate with screws) and had been back at all her sports (running, skiing, volleyball etc) along with lifting and stretching, all dr approved for at least two years, she began feeling back pain again, turned out she rebroke it! And she hadn't had any big accident or anything that would have made her think she rebroke her back, just normal activities with zero injuries and one day her back started hurting, she went to the dr and had exrays and they told her it was rebroken. So although it could be NBD it's definitely good that you are taking a break until you have had it looked at by your orthopedist just in case.0
