Hi there. I've been on a weight loss journey for over a month. I've been losing pretty steadily. However, last week I only lost 1 pound and this week I gained 1 1/2lbs! We had a 4th of July picnic on Saturday and I ate over 1800 calories! On a typical day, I eat 1200 - 1400 calories. I do not exercise and am 5 ft. Could it just be I gained weight on the scale this AM because I overate on Saturday? Or what could it be? I'm very discouraged as I have about 40 more pounds to lose. Please help.

I think you are going to be fine. It's all about CICO :-)

I would most definitely say it's water weight. Stay focused, drink extra water to help flush out the salt, and I'm sure you'll see a loss next week.

If your Saturday picnic included any of the following:
    • more sun exposure that normal
    • more salt intake than normal
    • more carbohydrate intake than normal
    • more exercise or a different type than normal

then I would suspect that you are retaining some water- it will pass (literally) in the next few days.

Your picnick did include more food (1800 cals rather that your normal 12-1400) and so you could reasonably expect to be a little heavier due to increased food in your system. Again - this will pass soon enough.

Good posts above. Couple additional notes:
    1. With only 40 pounds to lose your weekly weight loss goal should be a pound per week. More creates too aggressive a deficit.
    2. Exercise is vital for health as well as helping to create a calorie deficit. I feel strongly that anyone who can exercise, should exercise. There are many forms of exercise. I hate cardio machines and group classes at the gym but love to walk, swim, garden, and practice yoga.
    3. Women with a menstrual cycle often gain at ovulation and premenstrually, and therefore it is helpful to compare to last month rather than last week.
