Weight Fluctuating Drastically Over 1st 2 Weeks

Only been at this for about 2 weeks and only weigh in about every 3rd day. I am a very large guy and in 1st week lost approx 16 lbs. Was able to exercise 5 days that first week too.

This week, weighed in this evening and was back up 5 lbs from Monday's check in. I have not been able to exercise in a couple days because I sprained my foot so I assumed part of it was from that, and yesterday we had a pretty high sodium meal for dinner.

Any idea what causes such a big fluctuation? 5 lbs is a bunch for a couple days. I am eating under 2000 cal daily, not starving whatsoever, but the huge jump in a few days is a concern early on. Our meal was "heavy" yesterday with a couple baked potatoes, also was high in sodium. Today was a low sodium day, but not sure "how heavy" chicken weighed me down either.

NOTE: I don't normally weigh myself at night either.

Thanks all!!! Just trying to stay motivated and dropping the pounds until this pain goes away in my foot to get back out again.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery for your foot.

I never weigh myself at night but did so now just for you :) I'm up 3 pounds from this AM. Best to weight yourself first thing in the AM.

Here's a great video on how our weight can fluctuate drastically throughout the course of the day:

It's water, assuming your calorie counts are accurate. You sprained your foot, presumably there was inflammation and swelling -- what do you think (directly) causes swelling? Water. Your body also needs extra water for healing the injured tissue.

Plus you had a high sodium meal, which also can cause increased water retention, as your body tries to maintain an appropriate electrolyte balance. Five pounds fluctuation is perfectly normal, especially if you are, as you say, "very large."

Hey man I honestly think most of that is because of time of day and sodium. I'm currently in med school and you'd be surprised how much water sodium makes you hold onto. Not saying to cut out sodium completely, just try and keep it consistent day to day. Also I've found that being consistent with time of day means more consistent measures. I wake up, urinate and immediately step on the scale. I wont even try weighing myself at any other time cause I know it'll be off. I think those too factors makes the 5 pounds of fluctuation make sense. I hope that helps, good luck staying motivated, I know I need it too!

My weight fluctuates plus or minus three pounds, then slowly goes down again. I've installed the Happy Scale app on my phone and input my morning weight. It records the trend and shows that despite the ups and downs, I'm still losing weight (about a pound a week for me).
