QUAD DOMINANCE

So I was at a bootcamp class the other day and I asked my trainer at the end why my glutes never seem to burn like others experience, but instead my quads tire.

Straight away she stated "you're quad dominant like me"! She went on to explain that my quads are taking over and not allowing my glutes and hamstrings to fire up.

Her physio has apparently told her to perform this exercise whereby she lies down face down, forehead resting on hands, and slowly tries to raise her legs a little whilst concentrating on trying to use her glutes and not let her quads take over. I tried this and I guess I'm not doing it correctly. Because I just don't get it.

I've read online that quad dominance is a lengthy thing to rectify.

Does anyone have any knowledge on this matter and tips on some ways to train my glutes to 'wake up' and 'pull their weight'!??

Thanks in advance

it's hard. with the muscles i have serious trouble 'finding', i use a hand to feel whehter or not i'm contracting it. with a big one like the glutes i sink that hand in a little and then tell myself to push it back out.

it can take 10 or 12 contractions just doing that before i start to feel the muscle in its own right. so doing that is just my warmup before i'm ready to do the drill itself.

so far lower trapezius and glute maximus are my biggest problems. if you wanted a fast track you could try the band-round-knees thing, although i found that drove the effort into all of my bum muscles and not just the big glute.

Maybe your glutes don't burn because they're strong. Or maybe you're not using enough resistance. Regardless, if your form is good, your muscles are working correctly, regardless of whether you feel them. Until you get assessed by a physio, assume the trainer's diagnosis is questionable. :+1:
