Need some help. So 1/4 cup of steel cut oats uncooked is about 150 calories, meaning if I added a full cup of oats (uncooked) to my shake I'd get an additional 600 calories? Doesn't seem right, if anyone can help I'll appreciate it!

Ya. 1/4 cup of steel cut oats is about 150.
You only need a 1/4 cup with 1 1/2 cups of water to make a bowl of oats.
The oats expand when water is added/cooked with it--just like rice.
So you want to put oatmeal in your protein shake? how big is your container?2

An entire cup of raw oats in one shake sounds excessive. I can't even imagine what that would taste like. But yes 150 × 4 = 600. That's the problem with shakes - if you're not careful you can easily make some seriously high calorie shakes.4

Haven't been training for any events this year, but when I do train and my miles get up there, I have a recovery smoothie I make that's about 1300 calories.0

I was planning on grinding up the cup of oats before hand so it's not as chunky. Also I'll be adding other high calorie foods such as peanut butter, milk, banana etc. Hoping it wouldn't taste as bad
Buy oat flour instead. No need to grind1

4x150 = 600 calories seems like a lot to add since water will make them swell. Did you try just using the 1/4 cup.0

OP, I've made oat milk with steel-cut oats. I soak them for about an hour and my blender handles them pretty well. I do have a Vitamix -- I'm not sure how powerful your blender is, so that will be a factor to consider. Once I add a bit of vanilla and a date or maple syrup, I find the taste to be quite pleasant.0

You're right there will be a texture in a smoothie for steel cut. You might try quick oats, they won't be chunky at all.....pretty smooth.
I generally make oat flour from Old Fashioned oats. Nice in baking.0

1 cup of oats ground up would turn your smoothie into a thick pudding. I would opt for 1-2 servings, not 4.2

I dont know what this is in cups, but i use 35g of oats in my smoothies, and it turns out just right. Any more than that, and i think it would turn into a thick sludge.0

35 g of old fashioned oats is about 1/3 cup (I do 40 grams for breakfast and it is a scant 1/2 cup). It is closer to 1/4 cup in steel cut oats.0

If I'm going to have a bowl of oats, i have 80g minimum. 40g ni a bowl = small, 40g in a smoothie with all the other stuff would be a decent amount.0

Maybe use rolled oats rather than steel cut. They'll blend up a lot better. But only 1\4-1\2 cup.1

Particularly with peanut butter and banana added. You could tar your roof with that.4

Way too much both in bulk and carb wise. 40 g with 1 cup of water cooks up into close to a cup of cereal which is plenty for me.0

I've never had the ye old fashioned oats or steel cut. I use the naff instant maple syrup flavoured ones Which i assume are no where near as bulky and filling as the former? 0 Which i assume are no where near as bulky and filling as the former? 0

True. Also more expensive and no faster to cook. 40 grams old fashioned oats (basic rolled oats, not quick cooking ones), 1 cup water, 2 minutes in the microwave and voila', yummy filling oatmeal.1
