Can weight gain have a "delayed reaction"?

I went on an 8 day vacation and did not gain weight.

Now, during that time I probably averaged 2x my usual activity level. I worked out every morning but it was in the mountains so the runs were harder and my heart rate was higher, plus during the day I also hiked, walked a lot and just did not really sit much.

I didn't track what I ate and ate what I wanted to, when I was hungry. It was awesome!

I just weighed in today (2 days after returning to let any airplane "weight" fade away) and didn't gain. I've always had to track VERY carefully (am at goal weight, am over 40, am petite), so I am a little hesitant to celebrate this because it just seems too good to be true. Normally I eat at around 1500 to maintain and I'm sure I ate WAY more than that.

Just wondering if there could be a cloud of poundage waiting to descend on me any minute now!!!

Nah, that's not how it works. You probably did not worse than maintenance with all the activity. Just like it doesn't come off in lumps (except water weight), fat doesn't go on in lumps. It was only 8 days.

Unless you are very dehydrated and nothing in your GI tract compared to usual, there is no hidden weight gain. It's quite common for people not to gain weight on vacation, some people even lose weight!

You mentioned you worked out 2X your normal activity level. That would negate anything you probably ate over maintenance. I doubt you'll see any weight gain and if it is, it's probably just water weight that'll be gone in a day.

Yay, thanks! Happy to have avoided the "souvenir" I was expecting to bring back with me!!
