Runners & toenails

I have never lost a toenail or had a black and blue toenail, but for years, I've gotten pretty deep chips on my toenails and have them cut really short to try to prevent this from happening. I assumed the breaks/chips were from running, as I never had this issue prior to being a runner, and they usually happen after longer runs. But today I got a pedicure and the aesthetician said that I likely have a health problem, because runner toenail injuries are horizontal and vertical chips aren't normal. I JUST had my annual GP visit and don't really want to go back over toenails so was just wondering whether other longer distance runners get this?? I am healthy otherwise as far as I know!!
