I started by signing myself up for a spartan race that was 7 months away and used that to push myself each week to go to the gym and eat healthy. I started Jan 2017 at 270 pounds and am now sitting at 222 pounds. My race is a couple weeks away and am excited to do it and set my self up for other races after it. One thing I recommend when you are loosing weight is to have a cheat meal once a week so you don't go crazy.
