With what else does one cut oats rather than steel?

One rolls it between steel rollers.

Or if you want to get fully paleo, grind them in a stone mortar and pestle.

    Uh.

    Is this a trick question?

When I was a kid I wondered how long one short mile was. I mean, the garish signs on the highway promised they were only one short mile away.

I also scoured the sides of the highway for signs of deer. Those Watch for Deer

Heck my long response got cut off.

If a package says steel cut one must wonder how else the oats get cut?

I think this is a historical add-on. Steel rollers revolutionized grain milling. Steel cut likely meant the purchaser did not have to worry about stone grit in her oats.

And I never found deer where the signs said I would.

Oh, that makes sense now. Steel cut tells the purchaser that there is no stone grit, and thus deserves the higher price of better quality.
