Fit relationships -> Fit Body

I know that most people on MFP are focussing on getting a fit body. But based on my recent experiences, I want to encourage everyone that's married or in a relationship to remember to focus on your relationship as well. It's a little too late for my relationship with my wife of 19 years, but hopefully, my words will help someone out there. Guys, especially, need to make the effort to open up and really communicate with their partner. I've been a quiet guy forever. I needed to make the effort (but I didn't) to make time to listen to my wife and have deeper conversations - not just routine discussions about the kids or that my day at work was "good". Relationships take work. Just like a healthy body. We always hear about a "calorie deficit" to lose weight. Conversely, you need an "emotional surplus" to keep your relationship healthy. And that will just give you one more great reason to be fit. A very practical tip I heard recently was to set aside a specific time (i.e. first 30 mins of "date night" or weekday), when you talk with your partner and even take notes. This shows your partner that you care as well as helps guys to really think about and respond thoughtfully to their partner. I wish I had done this.
I'm focussing on getting fit physically and emotionally now.
