At first... I really thought it was just "hype" and a way to sell "powders". But more and more I am reading about the value of protein after a workout. I thought it was really just a lifting thing, but there is a lot of stuff out there about it helping nourish after a good cardio.
So, I think I will investigate this. Any recipes out there? Looking for something easy to make and take to the gym. Everyone says its most effective within the hour after workout.

Just eat a regular meal after cardio once you get home. You do not need a shake...0

Don't know about the benefits of a shake after cardio but I love this one ....

Awesome! Ordered and... Ordered! :-)0 -
If I can't get a high protein meal in right after the gym, my go to favorite is a Vanilla Whey with Orange Gatorade. Tastes like an orange dreamcicle and mixes easy.
Dont forget, you can cook with Whey Powder too. Lots of recipes out there. For instance, I made a 50g (protein) Waffle this morning. (oats, protein, egg, baking powder and cinnamon).0 -
The protein is the important part, not the shake and within an hour of your workout. The powder is really convenience. Take the powder with you in a shaker cup, add water (ice optional), shake and done. This is why their are so many flavors out there now.
Milk and Chocolate milk have protein too... in a pinch drink a glass when you get home.
I do tend to buy vanilla whey protein for shakes though when I use them. A frozen banana, a scoop of protein powder, some cocoa powder and some PB and I've got a milkshake style meal!
This really depends on if you just want the protein after your workout, or if you want the shake to supplement a meal. The more you add to it, the more the calories/fat/carbs/protein/sugar build up.0 -
I make this for breakfast after my cardio:
Cinnamon roll protein shake
1 cup skim milk
1 scoop of vanilla protein powder
1 tablespoon of vanilla extract
1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
It tastes exactly like cinnamon rolls!0 -
6oz fat free plain Greek yogurt
6oz Almond Plus milk
1/2 ripe frozen banana
1 tbsp peanut butter
Packet of Sweet Leaf
2-3 cups baby spinach
Some ice cubes
I mix this all in blender. About 27g of protein and tastes really good.0 -
Protein timing is completely unnecessary and does nothing. Hit your protein macro for the day. That's all there is to it. If you want to use a protein powder to reach your protein goal, go for it. I certainly do. But there's no need at all to worry about getting in a shake just after exercising, that's an old myth that just won't die.
MAYBE if you are an elite professional athlete, timing may be more important, but for the average person, it will make no difference.0 -

You don't NEED to have anything after cardio or weight training. Just hit your macros for the day that is it.0

I sometimes have problems hitting my protein macro along with my calories, and decided to add protein powder when needed. I use Muscle Pharm-banana cream, and it is delicious. By far the best one I've tasted, can be mixed with any liquid but I would suggest water or milk.0
