Biking up hills

I am just starting to bike ride. My route for now is 3 miles. But as soon as I get out my drive I have hills in all directions. And more hills on my route. I've gotten where I don't have to walk my bike off them, but it is still strenuous and I work up quite a sweat by the time I get home. My question is, when I log 30 minutes into my exercise I use the leisurely 10-12 mi. But it only gives me 47 calories burned. I'm pretty sure I should be burning more. And when I used the BMX I get around 500. So, how would find the correct way to log this.

You might want to try an app for the biking, as it could possibly factor in the elevation changes along with your speed, weight, bike weight, etc. I live where it it really flat, so others might have good first hand info on which apps would estimate the best.
The MFP calorie burns are generic at times, but hills on a bike can be so variable that a reliable calculation is fairly tough to get without more data than time vs distance.0 -
Strava will give you a better estimate for calories than most, by estimating how much power is required to go your speed at your weight and for the gradient (steepness). Wind is where they fall short.
Use your granny gear, and slow down, try to "level" there hill by putting out the same effort you would on the flat.0 -
I bike too, I would definitely consider map my ride, I use it, I get at least 12.50 miles a day. (only during the weekdays)I hate that it's considered leisurely cause it's hard work.0

I will look into these apps. I only have a tracfone though.0
