Any tips or anything for a first time lifter? Are they ok for a newbie? TIA

I'd be more inclined to buy a 30K dumbbell set with chromed DB bars and an assortment of discs so you can adjust weights for different exercises. You will also be able to buy more weight discs as you gain strength if you are going to give strength training with dumbbells a serious go.

My first thought - you will soon outgrow any dumbbells you will find on a DB tree if its the ones I am thinking of.

Are you thinking about the 1-3kg ones? Even if you're an absolute beginner, 1-2kg will only serve you for maybe two weeks, 3kg for maybe a while longer. I think you should just go to a sports store and get one set that you find challenging, start with that, then when it gets light, go get a heavier set one. I've done it that way and after a year I had a collection of dbs progressing from 5 to 25lbs (without straining my wallet).

Thanks for the tip. I'm really really new to this (and dont have a great deal of upper body strength) The tree ones I'm looking at are 2x 1.2kg, 2x 2.5kg and 2x 4.5kg. I can get it pretty cheap so I'm not bothered about them becoming redundant in a few weeks/months if I feel I could do more. I was more concerned that if I spend more and then not be able to make use of them it's a waste of money. Is there a good site that I can use to get some good exercise ideas? I love recommendations over googling because I know more experienced people will point me in the right direction if they can

Check out EBay or Gumtree for any second hand sets in your area. You would probably be better off getting a larger set that will last you longer.

I love this one, you can look up exercises depending on muscle groups and equipment available.

    Something like this:

    http://www.gymkituk.com/physical-20kg-spinlock-dumbell-set/?gclid=CN3P5MyR0rgCFRMgtAodPnAAgQ

    rather than this:

    http://www.amazon.com/Reebok-05-59278-Easy-Store-Dumbbell-Tree/dp/B008R514GY

You will get a longer use out of the first example and be able to build further weight plates onto the set when you need. The tree will end up in a cupboard somewhere when you get bored with it.
