I exercise to lose weight but I also want to gain endurance and be strong like an athlete. Any insight on what kind of training I should be doing, how many times a week and most importantly for how long each time?

Whatever you do, ramp up slowly. Don't start out exercising your *kitten* off 6 days a week. If you've not been exercising before, start with 2-3 days per week for 30 minutes. Slowly add time every 1-2 weeks up to 60 minutes. Then you can think about adding days.
Begin with walking. When you can walk 3-4 miles in less than a hour, start C25K. Also begin strength training, with weights, TRX, or resistance bands. It takes time. Most athletes have been working at it at least 10-20 years.
This is very general advice for novice beginners and those with physical limitation. If you have a higher fitness level and no physical issues, you can progress faster.

If you don't have a specific sport in mind start either walking to gain endurance or lifting weights to build strength three days a week for 30 minutes. Then, once you feel settled in add in the other one on alternating or the same day. Add more weight, time, or speed when you are ready.
