Google translate says that says, "They all wound last kills"

    Maybe added for context

    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Or maybe Google Translate isn't as good as I hoped. :(

Have you ever used Bing Translate? It's like a 5 year old's best guess

I know what I'm doing tonight!

Is no one else irked that these numbers go anticlockwise? When it is essentially a clock?

Nope. From the web "All (hours) wound, the last kills. (inscription on solar clocks)". Is it really counter clockwise....if it is a clock (of sorts)? Hmm

Probably because of its placement. It's a sundial

I was wondering why it was shaped like that. Being a sundial is probably the answer to my anti clockwise question.

I honestly don't know enough about sundials to confirm but it's just a guess

You're going to make me google this huh.... I already know that the sun, because of the way it sets and the position of the clock means the shadows move that way through the day. Now to confirm my hypothesis.

After learning about solar panels and the fact that the best place to place them is facing the south (because you get the full sun all day) I google mapped the church and confirmed that clock does in fact face south. So the shadow moves from left to right.

A vertical direct south sundial in the Northern Hemisphere and a vertical direct north sundial in the Southern Hemisphere can tell the time between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m.

    Here are some interesting facts:

Public clocks would be decorated with mottos such as ultima forsan ("perhaps the last" [hour]) or vulnerant omnes, ultima necat ("they all wound, and the last kills").

It relates to the fact that Memento mori (Latin: "remember that you have to die") is the medieval Latin Christian theory and practice of reflection on mortality, especially as a means of considering the vanity of earthly life and the transient nature of all earthly goods and pursuits. It is related to the ars moriendi ("The Art of Dying") and similar literature.

Here are some other vertical Sun Dials.
