I am a substitute, never been a certified teacher (background in counseling), but I work pretty close to full time when school is in session. The first year that I subbed, I gained 30 pounds! NO NO NO! Things had to change!
Many days I do not have a planning period because I will be pulled to cover for another teacher who has a meeting or needs IEP time, etc. I leave my house at 6:30 to be at school at 7:00 (high school).
I get up at 4:45 and have my coffee while doing 30 minutes of stretching. Then I am ready for whatever opportunity may arise to squeeze in some form of activity during the day.
I take full advantage of the stairs at school. Great exercise especially with a backpack full of everything I need for the day, including my 64 oz of water.
The school schedule is very odd to me, 4 periods/day that are from 84-87 minutes long. I cannot sit even 1/2 that time so I am constantly up moving around. I think it makes the teens nervous (like I am watching them, well ok I AM!) I also always volunteer to sub for Girls' Weightlifting and Yoga. P.E. gets to be pretty chaotic as a sub, so I try to avoid that at all costs. If I do get a planning period, I have basically an hour and 20 minutes on my hands, because I am a sub and the planning is done, so I either walk the halls and do the 3 floors of stairs on either end or I lock the classroom door and get to exercising.
One perk is that I am in a brand new school and we are lucky to have the huge Smart Boards which are awesome for exercise videos. There is a group of teachers that meets every Friday after school and does a country line dancing exercise video. I have also been in one classroom that the teacher keeps a 10 lb dumbbell under the desk. I thought I had hit the jackpot that day! It's amazing how many things you can do with 1 dumbbell.
The other thing that I have learned is to stay out of the staff lounge~~ too many calories lurking around in there! I also do a set of 10 squats every time I get a bathroom break. They do add up!3 -
I really need to get organised with this. I am so good in the holidays but as soon as I am back at work I fall off the exercise regime within a few weeks of being back at school.0

I'm a little amused that the teacher's thread spelled initiative wrong.16

I am an English teacher; I can spell but I can't run.1

I stand and walk most of the day when I teach. I only sit down to eat or when I am giving out important papers to individual students. I go to the gym right after work.3

I workout every day before school, and after school Monday-Thursday, two of those being lifting days(if possible). I do another longer video Saturday morning and then try to run on Sunday. My summer schedule is different. No running, lots of videos, some lifting and swimming, maybe walking on my treadmill.0

I'm so much more active during term time - 12K steps by the end of the work day, easy! My problem is diet during term time - I'm so shattered I never have time to cook.
Historically the bad times for me are my hours -it's the lack of activity that's killer, and the extra socialising means lots more booze and meals out.
This year has been very different, thankfully!1
