Exercise and increased appetite

Last week I have joined a squat challenge and so far I loved it. The goal is to do every day around 50 - 100 squats (increasing with each day).
The only problem is that I got sooo hungry and my appetite increased a lot.
I don't quite understand it, since it's only body weight squating that I usually finish in 2-3 mins, so caloric expenditure shouldn't be big. Last few months I had very stable appetite, very controllable hunger, I could easily stay 300-400 cal under my maintenance level. Now I am struggling to not eat too much above maintenance. Have you experienced anything similar? Could it be really from squats or I have just become more lazy in my self control?
I have 20 more lbs to go to my goal weight. Do you have any advice? Should I drop squats until I come closer to it?

i'm not sure that a couple of minutes of exercise is really making such a difference?

try dropping them for a few of days and see?

Sounds weird to me also, but the only day I wasn't hungry last few days is when there was a rest day in the squat challenge.
I am considering to drop it, but since I've committed to a challenge, it feels like failing.
