I put my weight and height and stuff into mfp and it tells me to eat a lot just to gain .5 lbs every other week. I'm having a hard time eating this much is that normal?

Define a lot. If you need to gain weight you need to eat more than you have been.2

What are your stats and how many calories did it give you?
If you're having trouble meeting your goal, add in some calorie dense foods (nuts, nut butters, ice cream, full fat dairy, cooking oils, etc.)0 -

It's telling me to eat about 3000 calories a day and I've been eating mostly chicken, peanut butter, brown rice, eggs, and cliff bars everyday to meet it. Sometimes I'll eat an avocado and some nuts to boost my calorie intake.0 -

That actually doesn't seem too far fetched. On my last bulk, by the end, I had to hit 3175 per day, just to gain 0.4 per week, and I only weighed 175 at 5'10".1 -

That's about right for most males (I maintain at 3k), but drop the bro-diet and eat real foods. Eat fatty cuts of meat, fish, chicken with skin, ribs, nuts, butters, oils, etc...3 -

I take a Protein Shake called Carnivore Mass, it has slow acting carbs and protein, I do 2 scoops a day instead of the suggested serving of 4 scoops, that's just too much. I drink whole milk with some healthy cereal like shredded wheat. I eat a good amount of Peanut Butter daily, eggs, and if you need you can get Ensure Plus or Boost Plus these are dietary drinks, but made for those who have difficulty gaining weight, I think they taste great and loaded with calories and vitamins too. It seems that most people are in the 3,000 range, that's the same for me especially on my work out days it's actually 3,100 right now. Eat foods that are easy to eat, not requiring lots of chewing, some in form of liquids, and small portions throughout the day, that's how I was able to get used to eating a lot more. I had the same problem you did in the beginning.1 -
As others have said, you may need to drop some of the "clean" foods. I personally thrive on them, but I am a former fatty who still has a monstrous appetite, and would end up screwing myself into either gaining too fast or always being hungry if I tried the oils and refined carbs route.
5-6lbs. of fruit and veg per day? Don't mind if I do.2 -
3000 sounds about right - I maintain on 2500 and I'm female 5'3"
consider things like full fat yogurt (noosa is da bomb); ditto with milk (I do a bowl of cereal/milk right before bed)3 -

Should I drink protein and ensure shakes on days I'm not working out too?0 -

you don't need to (honestly, you don't need protein shakes at all if you can get your protein through other foods)1 -

If you do decide to go the shake route, get something that's actually mostly protein. Ensure is basically overpriced sugar water1 -

My maintenance range is around 2800-3000...meet your nutritional needs, but lose this notion that everything has to be "clean" and all chicken breasts and broccoli and stuff. Have some ice cream for desert...drink some calories...eat some fattier cuts of meat...etc, etc...
You might also find eating throughout the day instead of just scheduled meals will help...1 -
