Activity level

Hey guys! Just downloaded this app yesterday - had a quick question on activity level: since I'm off during the summer I go to gym 4-5 days a week. When I'm back to work it's 3-4. Should I keep activity level as lightly active or active. A friend a mine told me to keep it lightly active because when I input my workout the calories will change and I will see an increase. Not sure what to do - also do I eat what I burn? Never counted calories before.

how many steps do you get outside of purposeful exercise?0

Gym (or any purposeful exercise) isn't part of your activity setting on here.
You set your activity according to your job and general lifestyle. Set it accurately - don't try to second guess a desired outcome!
Yes this app intends you to log exercise and you get extra calories to account for that exercise.
So your myfitnesspal goal "xxxx" is for a non-exercise day. On an exercise day it's "xxxx" plus exercise calories.
If you prefer to guestimate your general activity and exercise all in one estimate and eat the same amount every day then set your goal manually using the number from one of the many TDEE sites.
With a varied routine the myfitnesspal routine may suit you better but it's personal preference really as (if done properly) they both end up in the same place over time.2
